This place has some unique soldiers and Harriet Tubman representation figures that greet you as you enter the fort area..they are painted life size figures. It is a pristine area with no one there to oversee it. There is good information near each figure. Would...More

Fort Howell is an earthen mound fort. It was dug with pick, shovel, and man power during the civil war era. What you will see is a great way to preserve history as the park maintains the fort with little interference. There are markers along...More

Fort Howell was a mound fort to protect the freed slaves built after the Civil War. There are metal figures representing people instrumental with the fort, a Union flag that shows the Union didn't removed stars once the South succeeded. We appreciate learning about a...More

The Fort Howell site is a fairly well-preserved earthwork-style Civil War fort that has been set aside as a historical park. This is a must-see for history buffs. There is a trail along much of the earthworks, and informative displays sprinkled throughout. The site has...More

This was a quick 30 min stop, to stand right at Fort Howell. To think of the soldiers that served here. They never had to fight, but they stood their post. Neat.

Riding past and decided to stop in. Interesting historic fort made primarily of earthworks. The history of the fort was interesting, in that it was created to primarily serve the slave/freedmen community nearby. Constructed to essentially big dirt hills with a moat--hard to visualize it--would...More

We stayed down the road from here and decided to ride our bikes to check it out. It's a neat little piece of history. It's a nice, short stroll that you will take you back to an ugly place in U.S. history.

´Tis a grand day. And Fort Howell provides interesting history. The slaves of Hilton Head were free prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. Fort Howell was an earthen works fort, and much of the fort has been reclaimed by nature. We recommend.

This is a small fort that was built using the dirt as walls so if you look carefully as you walk around you can see how the soldiers hid behind the slopes. It's a short walk, but interesting nevertheless.

I enjoyed what I got to read about the fort in the first few step, and I just happened to come while the artist was there working on the standing figure of General Howell. The fort itself is no longer there, but I was looking...More
