This museum and research place is a must see if you at all interested in history. Some years back we were in Charleston when the Hunley was first found & we have always wanted to see the submarine and learn about it. The museum is only open to visitors on Saturday & Sunday & you must make reservations! Bill was our guide and was very knowledgeable. The information he gave was very easy to understand.

This is an amazing museum/research center. A tour is a must to really understand all aspects of the concept of this first submarine to successfully sink a ship. Our tour provided excellent information on how and who was involved in the building of the Hunley, its being moved from Mobile, AL to Charleston, SC. The success of the Hunley, the first submarine to sink a ship, and then it was lost for over 130 years. Hearing the story of when the Hunley was discovered on the floor of Charleston Harbor and the “challenge’ of deciding what next to do with this historical submarine, as well as the remains of the crew is intriguing. It took and still takes a tremendous amount of foresight, preparation, planning to determine the best methods for preserving the Hunley. A slow process for each step. Anyone visiting will easily become enthralled with the amazing, yet tragic story that continues today.

We saw the Hunley years ago and returned today; it's amazing how different the submarine itself looked with most of the concretion removed from the hull. Though small, the museum exhibits are informative and, along with the guides, do an excellent job retelling the story of this sea craft and its courageous crews. Don't forego the trip just a few miles down the road to visit the haunting Magnolia Cemetery to see the final resting place of the Hunley's crew men.

Hubby and I love history, so this was a no brainer. It is only open to the public Saturdays and Sundays. We stayed over an extra day to see it. You can buy tickets online for ease. It was our favorite thing we did! So interesting! You van tell the volunteers really care about what they do! Highly recommend!

We spent an hour listening to the history of the IL Hunley submarine and viewing it submerged in sea water. It was fascinating to learn of what 8 men did, seeking glory and riches, only to end up at the bottom of the harbor. Their endurance and stamina, sitting in an submarine's space 48" X 42" in size.
