We've seen a lot of cathedrals in our travels, but this one was very different and spectacular... not only in the archetecture, but also in the way they worship and the way that beliefs syncronize.

The drive through the altiplano brings you to Lampa. What a surprise. A charming well maintained town square AND a church which is beautiful from the outside and inside as well. The doors may be locked butif you call the telephone number on the door a young lady will come with an enormous bunch of keys and let you in. Inside is full of surprises. Many beautiful paintings from the 16 and 17 th century and a crypt which has a real size copy of Michaelangelos Pieta ( really beautiful ) and a fascinating collection of skeletons and skulls surrounding the last resting place of an important local. Its well worth the vsit.

In Lampa is a true/original copy of The Pieta from Michel Angelo. Is the unique piece in the world created from de original mold of The Pieta.
This original mold is now destroyed.
Go to Lampa and enjoy this magical place!!!!

We stayed in Lampa for one night during our cycling tour of Peru and Bolivia and I found it to be the most fascinating of all the small towns we visited. During the Spanish colonial era Lampa was an important mining and trading center but it is largely by passed nowadays with the building of highways that connect the larger cities of Puno and Juliaca. The main attraction is the Templo de Santiago Apostol which is one of the most spectacular churches in South America. It contains many interesting artifacts and houses a nicely displayed catacombs. The church crypt does contain one copy of Michelangelo's 'La Pieta'. Another copy in plaster is in the town hall museum. As other reviewers have stated these copies were used to help rebuild the original in Rome some years back.
So if you are in the region by all means take the time to visit Lampa. You will not be disappointed.
And dont forget to have a cup of Maca in the Plaza de Armas.

Lampa is a charming little town in the middle of the altiplano. It is just 30 minutes from the Juliaca airport and a great visit before you head into Puno and Lake Titicaca. The town has a beautiful church which has many surprises. The guide was very informative and gave us a great tour. The best part was the full size replica of Michaelangelo's Pieta and the crypt where it is kept. This official replica was used by restoration artists to repair the original in Italy. The place is beautiful and very few tourists go. It was worth the visit!

We took a side trip on the way to Juliana airport to visit this Historical church in Lampa. A highlight was the copy of the plaster statue of "La Pieta" by Michelangelo, specially brought in from the Vatican. With a side trip.

Our guide suggested stopping here on the way to the airport. What a charming city with a beautiful church and a fascinating museum in the municipal center. Really unspoiled with no tourist facilities, just an incredible city/village that is absolutely authentic.

Lampa is a must place to stop over for 1-2 hours, the town shows the real life in Andes, quiet, very villange like, just stroll around and you will feel great.

The Cathedral and its history are amazing, strange for such a small town. The guide we had within the Cathedral was the best guide we had in all of our trip in Peru, she was a dentist collage student just doing this because she loves her town and the church and has been helping in the Cathedral since she was a little girl.

We got a private taxi there and back. The church was decorated in so many little trinkets and artifacts it's hard to see the walls in places. At the altar to the right is an alcove dedicated to dolls of every colour, size and dress. Very colourful. We paid the 10 sol to look around the crypts underneath the church. We had a translator so this helped although the lovely lady showing us around knew a little English. When we arrived there was a funeral going on but our guide said it wasn't a problem, said hello to his uncle in a pew as he walked past, and found the lady for our guide.

The crypts are small and warren like. Some of the small holes you are within touching distance of bones. They keep a 'haunted' skull at the beginning in a glass case that you can drop coins in or flowers. At the other end is another skull with lots of coins in the eyes and mouth.

Afterwards you're taken to a small chapel area that looks brand new. It has many bones decorating the walls in patterns with a burial tribute at the bottom. You can look in small windows all around the outside of the building in a building to see these bones.

There is also a depiction of Jesus made from the skin and other animal remains to make it look like real flesh and blood. In the dark room they keep it in it looks quite sinister!
