We invite you to visit the historic homes of famous author, Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Have a fun filled day visiting the Surveyors’ House from By the Shores of Silver Lake. Attend class in the First School of De Smet, the original school that Laura and Carrie attended and visit the home that “Pa” built in 1887.

Visit the Discovery Center for Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Homes pioneer activities! Try to sew on a treadle sewing machine, dress like a pioneer, and learn to read Braille.

Admittedly, I never read the books, but the visit does greatly tempt me to do so. We did not go on the tour because it was already fully booked with school kids. So really, if you want the tour, arrange ahead of time. But even without the tour, you can wander outside the buildings, spend some time in a museum-type... More

As a book-lover, I've wanted to visit this place for most of my life. We had a wonderful tour, with a smart and spunky tour guide who reminded me of an elderly Laura herself. The final Ingalls house and the replica of the school where Laura taught were interesting. Best of all, though, was seeing the original school that Laura... More

Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The tour itself was a reasonable length for a decent price and was very interesting and engaging. The gift shop had a good selection of merchandise at reasonable (but still gift shop) prices.

Our tour guide, Stewart, was a great guide. He is great with kids. If you are a fan of the Little House books or TV show, I'd suggest to you that this is a must see. Most of the information will be familiar to Little House fans, but it is pretty cool to be in the place we imagined while... More

Although we visited this on the weekend and couldn't take the tour of the inside of the buildings, I wouldn't have missed it. We walked around the small area where the Ingalls et al buildings are and read all the information that was posted on them. Then we drove around the town of De Smet. What a beautiful little town... De Smet, SD is a great little town. We didn't do the walking tour b/c it was chilly out, but we did see a few of the sites. I liked the gift shop, I was able to get a Christmas Ornament and some postcards. This a cute little town.

This was unexpected. We were not sure what we were getting into when we got there. Extremely well informed staff and guides. Lots of information and really brings even the TV Series to life.

Like a lot of others, I grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books and watching "Little House on the Prairie" on TV. All of DeSmet brings the family to life, especially touring the school, surveyor's house (where the Ingalls family lived for a time), and the Ingalls home that Pa built in 1887. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip back to... More

We had an absolutely lovely time touring the buildings and seeing the town of De Smet. Stuart was a fantastic tour guide who took his time talking about the Ingalls family and the buildings themselves. This is a must see if you are a LIW fan!

The Memorial society has done a great job in saving and maintaining the buildings. It was great to be in the Surveyors house, particularly - as this one is the closest to the way it was when the Ingalls lived there. The tour consists of the guide repeating the stories from the books, so you don't get any new information.
