We came across this little gem because it was raining and chilly so we couldn't go swimming. We walked in to a paradise for my teenage dinosaur junkie. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the displays were amazing for the location. We were greatly surprised. A must see for dinosaur enthusiasts!

Great little museum jam packed with so many interesting things. We could spend hours here. There is also a nice little gift shop with everything from fossils and minerals to books and jewelry. The last time we were here our son was 5. Now he is 11 and had been anticipating our return all week! If you like all things... More

This building was not large but packed with extinct animal and sea creature skeletons, fossils, beautiful rocks, crystals, minerals, geodes, historical local mining photos, and a whole lot more. The adjoining store sells all kinds of interesting and varied items. Warning! It is likely you will find something you just got to buy and take home. A great place for... More

Black Hills Geo Institute was a perfect stop for our Scouts! We took a large troop through the museum and they accommodated us so well. There's also a nice park a couple blocks away to eat at but parking is limited. The museum is smaller but the content is amazing.

My kids loved this quick stop. The museum is, as other reviewers have said, tiny, but there are a lot of things to look at. In a small corner is a sand excavation place for small children with some toy dinosaurs (which they also sell in their shop). Yes, we did buy one on the way home. Plan on spending... More

This unassuming museum is amazing - the fossils and gemstones are unparalleled and the staff so generous with their time - talking one and one with inquisitive kids and adults, and so knowledgeable (leading us around to things of interest, recommending books, resources, other museums). Don't miss the dinosaur fossil named after JK Rowling's books! ;-) And the gift shop... More

I took from son here for his 9th birthday present. We got to meet Pete Larson which was the highlight of the trip for my son. Pete went out of his way explaining all the different bones to my son.

These folks have found both the most complete and second most complete T-Rex in the world. Stan is on display (2nd most complete) and amazing. Their collection is world class and includes the huge sea turtle and amazing flora and fauna fossils. The gift shop sell some very typical thing and some not so typical like museum grade fossils. If... More

I work in tourism - specifically youth travel and had the chance to scope out the area before a work trip next month. My first intuition was to take my group (75 pre-teen boys) to the Dinosaur Museum in Rapid City but after the WORST experience with the staff and facilities I quickly rebounded here - and boy am I... Though the museum is small and they need more space they have this gem packed with cool dinosaurs, gems, rocks and much more! The gift shop is larger than the museum itself and everything is packed into a tight space. Take your time roaming through it or you will miss a lot of cool stuff. They have a very extensive...
