Spent a half day driving and hiking in Spearfish Canyon in late September. Beautiful sights. Definitely get out of the car and hike the short trails and see the waterfalls. The hike up to the overview of the canyon was worth it. Wish I had stayed at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge.

The drive is very scenic. Being from Colorado I would have thought I was back home. Road is curvy but easily driven. Lots of places to stop and take in the views.

Whoever is driving has to have 2 eyes on the road, but you need another 2 eyes for some of the most dramatic natural scenery ever. Those craggy peaks against a gorgeous October blue sky, and the river you parallel are incredible.

Arrowhead, sharp peaks provide the perimeters for this canyon displaying the various levels of rock determined by millenia of residue collectives. The story of the history of our earth in plain sight for all to enjoy. Rivers, lakes, flora, fauna abound. A wonderful capsule of answers to the mystery of evolution. Great for all, kids included.

the drive is super gorgeous and the ops for hiking are everywhere. this is a great day trip for anyone interested in seeing some waterfalls and just checking out alongside road mini hikes (many are less than 3 miles round trip).

Very pretty drive. In 2016 the peak was the last week of September. I called the Spearfish Canyon Lodge to get info on the best time to see the leaves and they were very nice to give me that info. There are areas to pull off the road for pictures or just to take in all that beauty. Stop for... More

Words and pictures can't capture the beauty of this canyon. It gets very busy but take your time and enjoy the drive. Stop a few times and get out and enjoy the sounds of the creek and the peacefulness of the canyon. Look for Bald Eagles, we saw several circling.

I drove the canyon road at sunrise in October and found myself wishing I had more time to devote to stops on the hour-long route.

Most of the trees had already changed colors a week or so before we were there however the weather was beautiful so we took a 2 mile walk in the trail near Spearfish Canyon Lodge.
