Orchard Knob is a trip back in time in the middle of a city neighborhood. Reading about the battle of Chickamauga and Lookout Mtn. and the importance of this small city block is amazing. Nice little hike to the top of the hill, and when you get to the top you totally understand why Grant found it so important. Great... More

One can just imagine General Grant,Thomas and Sherman standing on top of Orchard Knob at daybreak, the sun going over Missionary Ridge. As the sun rises it is hitting the monuments on top of the Knob and is quite a treat not to mention the view during this spectacular time of day. Orchard Knob now is surrounded by the city... More

It is true that it is not in a great area. However, we were there on a week day in the middle of the day and had no issues. It is true that the signage could have been better and it was not kept up like other Civil War historical sights. It was amazing how far away it was fro... More

Orchard Knob is a great stop for someone wishing to visit all of the important areas of the battles for control of Chattanooga. From this site, you can get the same vantage point as the Union commanders before and during the assault on Missionary Ridge. It is a small site but worth the half hour or so that a visit... More

You MUST check out Orchard Knob! The monuments are quite impressive and the views from the top are amazing! You can see downtown, Lookout/Signal Mtn, and Missonary Ridge!

Despite having lived in Chattanooga around 30 years this was my first trip to the Orchard Knob portion of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. There is no dedicated parking for the park but there is plenty of space on the streets surrounding it. It is also important to note that this is not the best part of town.... More

This location was several miles from Missionary Ridge and served as a signal station and Union headquarters. It played an important part in the battle of Missionary Ridge.

It was obvious why this area was chosen as a headquarters. You can see much of the surrounding terrain easily.

Stand near the monument and look up at the ridge. Wonder how the Confederates could hit this know from that distance--and why Union officer would think it a safe place to set camp. If you study this war, this is a special place with a special story. Orchard Knob is in the middle of a somewhat scruffy residential neighborhood. The... More
