The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

We visited nye while passing through, nicely restored working station. We had lunch in the restaurant and it was superb! Highly recommend eating here nicely prepared food. The model railway in the shop is worth a visit.

This review is specifically for the Santa Train this year. We actually love this railway and our son (now 20) is a shareholder - as an attraction it is great. We have been taking the Santa Train regularly over the past 19 years and have...More

Hello Thank you for your (unnamed) review and feedback. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed. The 'corporate types' always try to improve products based on passengers' feedback, and that is what informed many of the improvements made this year. The reasons are...More

Took the Santa train today with our 2 and 4 year old. A bit apprehensive after some mixed reviews but we really enjoyed it. Plenty of room on the train (our own assigned table), super friendly staff and surprisingly nice gifts from Santa. Plenty of...More

Compared to last year (2016) this has gone down hill - too many changes has taken away the traditional, "get on a steam train and visit santa " experience. The ticket arrival time was not the train departure time (understandable), but after waiting nearly an...More

Not sure about play area but there is the butterfly and otter centre next to the Buckfastleigh Station or the rare breeds centre next to Totnes Station. Children and adults alike will be delighted by either of these.
