Beautiful cross and wonderful medieval graves. Also stunning stone work in the chapel showing a medieval warrior. Well worth the visit. The walk here from Port Ellen is well worth it and even easier on a bike!. The woods here are a contrast to the rugged shoreline at Laphroaig and Lagavulin. The chapel and cross are fascinating for work about 1,300 years old. Seems amazing that the carving still lasts. Very well maintained chapel grounds, and a homemade cake stall too! Only the coffee was missing.

We visited as part of a day tour and our guide Dougie from Islay Private Tours was absolutely phenomenal with the information and history. Without the background and stories from the guide it would have been a very average visit. Would recommend a visit with a guide or having all the information already.

We decided to drive the road east from Port Ellen one windswept December afternoon, and stopped off here for a few minutes. It’s obviously a lovely, secluded spot that’s a few minutes drive from the last distillery, Ardbeg. The monolithic cross dates back to the 8th century and is apparently one of the best preserved in Scotland. So add this to the scenery and you’ve got a very pleasant place to while away a bit of time. Could be rather grim in the pouring rain though!

Truly enjoyed our tour here provided by Islay Tours and Dougie McTaggart. So much history hear and to see such details that have survived going back 1200 years. The area is beautiful and so quiet, being in such a remote part of the island. A must see!

Hire a bike from Jim’s Cycles in Port Ellen and cycle approx 7.5 miles along minor roads to Kildalton church and Celtic Cross. Pass deer, seals and birds of prey. Such a peaceful ride ending in an idyllic setting. You could of course take the lazy way and travel by car.

I am not a great passenger in a car so had taken anti-sickness tablets before being driven down to Kildalton. Just as well as the road was awful. The Cross and Church were very interesting to see. Also the Knight's grave inside the remains of the church graveyard.

If you are on Islay and spend time at Port Ellen, then a trip to the Kildalton High Cross and Old Parish Church is a must. It is a quiet place of reflection. It is worth the short trip to see this well mantained historical site.
