Fascinating time capsule of a building charting 500 years of change in and around Stranraer

The Castle of St John is a medieval tower house, built around 1500 by the Adairs of Kilhilt, one of the most powerful families in Wigtownshire (Galloway and Dumfries). Over the centuries it has been a fortress, a home, a local court, a military garrison, a prison and now a tourist attraction! Access is possible to all floors of the... More

I visited the castle on a wet spring day and was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome from the staff and I found the castle and the information supplied fascinating. I spent about 1 1/2 hours going round every nook and cranny and reading all of the displays and I learnt a lot in a short period of time Highly... More

It is only open for 2 months mid-summer, missing out all the tourists who would go in if only for a warm dry place of interest.

This was just a walk by as I have been in Stranraer frequently before and walked on past. The Tower is in the centre of the town and just looks like an old keep pretty ambiguous. The visit was purely of a interest in history but when at the top of the tower it became a photo opportunity of the... More

We enjoyed visiting this old castle which was a prison at one time. Great view from the top. Free entry.

If nothing else, it's worth a climb up the tower for the views around the surrounding area. Although some care needed if you struggle up stairs.

This is a lovely unassuming little castle/tower, which is a free must-see for anyone visiting Stranraer. Although it was our second time here, last visit being a year ago, it would appear that the small but 'tardis-like' castle had been partly replastered/painted and new information cards installed in each room...it certainly looked well maintained. The two ladies working there are... More

Not a big museum but well worth a visit. The building has been many things but the cells that now characterise the place are very well done. Look in the spy hole of the far end cell. It surprised us!! But the view from the top is worth the climb.
