170 acres of old forest, with lovely trails throughout. The trails are a bit difficult to discover, but once you are on them they are lined with trillium, mayapples, wild phlox, spring beauties all under huge old oaks and hickories. A few redbuds blooming in March add to the charm. Very delightful walking in the middle of an urban jungle. I can't tell you about the zoo or the Brookings Art Museum both of which are in the park as well. I loved the trails too much to brave the crowds.

Overton Park is a beautiful park in Memphis midtown. Old forest trail in the park offers several running paths with splendid forest views. Levitt Shell is an open-air amphitheater in the western side of the park at which you can enjoy plenty of free music concerts almost four night a week during Summer and Fall.
Brooks museum in the western side of the park is a small good quality art museum with a neat coffee shop inside. The park is very close to Overton Square where you can find great restaurants and entertainment options in a lively environment as well.
If you come to Memphis and would like to spend a few hours to relax in a park, enjoy the music, or run in the woods right in the heart of midtown, give Overton Park a shot and you will be satisfied.

Overton Park is in midtown Memphis. It is about 340 acres and contains a zoo, art museum, art school, 9 hole golf course, Rainbow Lake, a veteran's plaza, and an old growth forest. There are walking trails through the forest with signs describing many of the trees. The park is named for Judge John Overton, who co-founded Memphis along with Andrew Jackson and General James Winchester.

My daughter attends Rhodes College which is across the street from Overton Park. For three years, we have been looking at this beautiful park from the outside but never went in. As luck would have it, we were there on the last Sunday of the month when they offer a FREE nature tour. (Also offered the second Saturday, both at 10 AM) We learned all about this gorgeous old growth forest that is right in the middle of midtown. As with any nature tour, you learn so much more than if you just walked the trails yourself. I would highly recommend this tour. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning.

We went solely for the playground and loved it. I played here all the time when I was a kid but it was nothing like it is now. My kids played for over two hours and didn't get bored. This area has come a long way since I lived here. They even have a great looking dog park across the parking lot. Lots of people running and walking on the trail through the woods. A little piece of heaven in the middle of Memphis.

This amazing city park once allowed cars, so all the walking trails are roads that have been turned into walking, cycling trails. This is a rare place that protects old growth trees. Wander through this place! Near the Brooks fine art museum and the Memphis Zoo.

This park is so cool! It's beautiful, and if I lived here I'd be running in this park all the time! I recommend a visit for a leisurely stroll or just to relax.

This park is in the heart of Memphis and is adjacent to the Memphis zoo. There are large fields and a playground with fun equipment. There are also two separate fenced areas called "Overton Bark" for small and large dogs to run and play. This was a fun spot for the dogs and their humans to visit and get some exercise in a safe zone

Virgin forest in the urban landscape is almost unheard of in the U.S., but you can find it in Memphis. Overton Park boasts several acres of woodland with three different botanical landscapes, entirely natural, almost completely untouched by man. The paths through it are great for walking, running, or biking. You can get a free map of the main, marked path at the old stone golf clubhouse. No cars are allowed in, so the city just fades away. Tours are given at 10 a.m. every second Saturday and last Sunday of each month by very knowledgeable guides.
The rest of Overton Park is wonderful too. The beautiful Brooks Museum has a small but marvelous permanent collection, traveling exhibits of everything from antique quilts to Italian masters, independent and foreign films shown nowhere else in town, lectures, and classes. Wednesdays are pay-what-you-can. And while you're in the park, drop in to the big Memphis College of Art building, which always has a small free exhibit of interesting modern work, usually local, on the entry floor.
On nice days, the man-made lake, called Rainbow Lake, is usually surrounded by happy dogs running loose or playing frisbee with their owners. My experience has been that the majority of the dogs completely ignore anyone they don't know, but the owners are friendly and willing to talk about their dogs.

This past weekend when visiting my brother in law in Memphis, we stopped at Overton Park for a little hike, and it was really nice! I'd driven through a bit of the park before when we visited the Brooks Museum of Art on a past visit to Memphis, but this time we explored the Old Forest within the park! It's 142 acres with four miles of unpaved walking paths, including a the one-mile Old Forest Loop trail. On a nice day, it's pretty beautiful! A great oasis in the middle of the city! Definitely worth visiting.
