The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

While it was interesting, it was not what we expected. There were some interesting pieces, but we appreciated seeing the old buildings more. The gates fascinated us the most with their uniqueness. Was it worth it? Using Groupon, yes.

I especially enjoyed the combination of exhibits and hands-on demonstrations in the foundry and blacksmith shop. Search 360.net using the museum name to see panoramic images.

This is an amazing museum with fascinating exhibits and activities throughout the year. Currently metal crafts from the 2015 Taiwan International Metal Crafts Competition are on display through March 13, 2016. It is a good reason to get to the museum. There are fabulous pieces in the exhibit, and a superb gift shop as well. Support this local Memphis treasure.

This inexpensive museum is well-worth an hour or two of your time. The current special exhibit is fascinating. The gift shop has LOVELY metal things at reasonable prices. It is interesting to watch the blacksmith at work. The setting along the Mississippi is very cool. (We saw barges going by as we strolled the grounds.) The yard art is interesting,... More

I always enjoy Repair Days at the museum. There is always a phenomenal master metalsmith's work on display and this year was no different! Beautiful location right on the river, always a fun visit.

One of Memphis best kept secrets. I've lived here my whole life and happened to stumble on the Metal Museum one day. I then brought my wife the following weekend, we were both amazed by the World Class Artisians.

My husband is a machinist so I planned a stop here on our vacation. He really enjoyed the artistry of the displays and seeing their workshop. He said he learned a few things while giving a few pointers to the students he talked to. The grounds are beautiful and we really enjoyed the artwork.

Interesting from the creative side & the metallurgy aspect. We are all familiar with wrought iron gates & fencing but giant daffodils, ornamental teapots, platters, benches; all stretch our ideas of what can be done with metal. Lovely grounds overlooking the river. Worth a stop to stretch your legs & your mind.

Live demonstrations in the blacksmith shop make it a fall friendly destination. Cool exhibits, found object yard art and a killer gift store. Skip Graceland and take your out of town guests here instead!
