Overview
More
The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

We had a couple hours to kill and the metal museum was near our hotel, so we took a chance. This was my favorite spot on our Memphis trip. The museum occupies some buildings on the grounds of an old hospital, there is a lovely...More

A Metal Museum doesn't immediately spring to mind as as a "Must See", but this one is. For $6 admission the chance to see old and new metal art is impressive. Also has a working forge and Foundry on the premise.

Visit in the late morning or afternoon. This is something you should do if you are a visitor to Memphis looking for something interesting. If you had rather be at a bar or pool hall, then don't go there. It is a blend of historical,...More

We didn't really know what to expect. The first thing that caught our eye was the ornamental gate and the really neat old buildings, both on the grounds and the hospital next door. We particularly loved the exhibits in the "white building" behind the main...More

Really enjoyed visiting the museum! The sculpture garden outside is very nice. We enjoyed the two shops. Unfortunately, there is no elevator to the second floor so my husband in his wheelchair couldn't go up there to see the Taiwan exhibit. The many things we...More

We arrive on a day that it was no charge to enter, good thing because I didn't see one metal worker insite. It did not live up to my expectations. Would not pay to go there, that's for sure.

I had a wonderful time visiting this historic building. This is a one of a kind museum and plays a significant part of the history of metal working. Plus, it is very close to the downtown/Beale street area.
