Great hike and swim in a natural swimming hole
Aug. 2020
What a gem in the Soddy Daisy area! I spent a long weekend on Lake Chickamauga (a COVID vacation) with my husband, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, and we tried to find a great hike to do each morning within our hour of our lake rental. Big Soddy Creek Gulf came up in my research, and I'm so glad it did!

The basics: Big Soddy Creek Gulf consists of an approximately 5-mile out-and-back trail along the creek. (I say approximately, because our Fitbit and Apple Watch trackers thought it was a little less than five miles total.) You're along the water the whole time, and it's beautiful and soothing (the sound of little mini falls throughout!). But the thing that makes this trail so unique and wonderful? Along the creek and trail, there are multiple natural swimming holes! We passed the first swimming hole within a quarter mile or so and another not too long after that. Both of those swimming holes had a family or two already set up with picnics or swimming (we were hiking around 11 am on a Monday in August), so we decided to take the trail to its end and see if we passed any other swimming holes. And we did! At the end of the trail, there was a large, beautiful swimming hole without a soul there! So we ate our packed lunches on the rocks by the water and then got in (got in - not jumped in - because it's rocky and slippery) for a quick (and cold - it's spring fed creek water after all!) swim!

The hike is pretty easy throughout, although there is an area where a bridge has collapsed and you have to make your way over without it. The last quarter mile of the hike is probably the most strenuous - lots of large boulders and a bit of climbing, but it's easy overall! There are picnic tables and porta potties scattered along the trail (there are two porta potties in the parking lot before you start the trail as well).

There is a large parking area at the trail head. When we arrived, there were lots of parked cars, but the trail wasn't crowded (granted, we did hike the trail on a weekday). We saw some other people, but most people stopped at one of the first few swimming holes or were walking dogs along the beginning of the trail. We only saw one or two people past the halfway point of the trail.

A hike and a swim at Big Soddy Creek Gulf was exactly what I needed this week. It was beautiful, and I left feeling refreshed. I recommend it if you're in the area and enjoy a swim in a natural swimming hole!

Beautiful

This was a day trip from Nashville to check this place out. It did not disappoint. To avoid the crowds, continue down the path that is less traveled. You will find multiple swimming holes that are less crowded. The water in some spots are spring fed so they are so refreshing.

Swimming hole
Sep. 2019 • Family
Our family of four plus our puppy headed to this park for the first time. The first swimming hole is only slightly more than 1/4 of a mile. There are lots of rocks for the kids to explore and they swam. It is beautiful. There are two picnic tables by the first swimming hole. There are no bathrooms, but tgey had portable ones in the parking lot. This is very easy with younger kids and older kids would have fun here too. Plus, it is free.

A nice walk
May 2019 • Family
We walked this trail around 5 PM and hopped in the swimming hole with 5 teenagers. It was a great way to cool off at the end of the day. As we were walking in most families we’re leaving. Might have been crowded earlier in the day.

Nice place for a wide, level walking path and access spots to the river.

We went in April on a weekday so it was almost deserted. I imagine it could get quite crowded in the summer. Parking area was nice, and the path was easy to walk. We didn't go all the way down the trail, but was a great way to spend a couple hours on the river.

SO beautiful! Worth the short drive from Chattanooga.

My husband visited Big Soddy Creek Gulf with our three sons (ages 11, 13 & 15) during Spring Break. It was a chilly April day, 61 degrees, so the water at the swimming hole was really cold! But we got in anyway just for a dip. We didn't complete the whole hike, but we the first 2 miles in then back out. All of that part was gravel and flat, so it was more of a walk than a hike. The creek and rocks are breathtaking! Yes, often the trail is far enough away from them that you can't really see them. If it had been warmer, we would have tried to hop from rock to rock rather than stay on the trail. I look forward to going back during the summer.

Trail for all Ages

We walked for three hours. Nice, wide level trail. We saw no creatures at all. We passed twelve other hikers/swimmers. The views of the river and of the rocks beside the trail are the best reason to take the trail. All free.

Great hike and creek
Aug. 2018 • Family
Our family hiked back to the second swimming hole. It's just past 1 mile on the trail. The water was clear and the kids loved feeding the fish bread. On the way back we stopped at the first swimming hole and Loved jumping from the rock into the water. The kids enjoyed climbing over the rocks and playing in the water. We will absolutely do this hike again.

This was a nice area for the kids to play in the river. There was a nice gravel walkway to get back to the swim area.

Lovely hike

Trail has gravel and is easy to walk on. View is beautiful! There are a few spots where you can get in the water, where the stream is flowing as fast. Saw beautiful waterfalls and nothing but the sound of nature.
