Take a guided educational tour and explore the gorge that was eroded 40 feet below the pre-flood terrain by the 2002 flood event, when flood waters went over the Canyon Lake Spillway for the first time in its history. This tragic event of nature "unearthed" a true Hill Country treasure which you can now experience firsthand with a trained guide. During your 3-hour tour, you will walk along an exposed fault zone, identify fossils, explore the Early Cretaceous limestone formations that were deposited over 110 million years ago, photograph dinosaur footprints, and even follow aquifer waters as they course through the Gorge as springs, channels and waterfalls. Tours available weekdays and weekends, only $10 per person.

This tour is a glimpse back to when dinosaurs roamed the land. Our well-informed guide showed us multiple dinosaur footprints, a large selection of well-preserved fossils, and discussed the 2002 flood as well as future flood mitigation. We also learned a lot about limestone, flora and fauna and the history of this fascinating place. This is a well-priced tour, and... More

This has been on my to do list for several years, but I was waiting for a non summer trip to the hill country. Myself, husband and two girls 12 & 15. Amazingly informative and interesting. The volunteer guides keep it entertaining and educational the entire time. Many fossils and interesting rock formations to see and discuss. For the young... More

We were looking forward to a day of relaxation, fun and learning about the gorge. Unfortunately the tour was ruined by the guide talking about politics. Very unprofessional!

I took the guided tour of the Gorge, which was created by the overflow of Canyon Lake several years ago. It uncovered so many fossils and shows so many layers of geology that you won't want to miss the tour if you're in the Canyon Lake area. Tours require reservations, but I highly recommend one. One thing to keep in... More

This Gorge was created in 2002 after a massive flood went over the Canyon Lake spillway. Millions of years of rock and soil were washed away in days. An immediate effort was made to preserve and showcase the site. You witness massive boulders that the water relocated. Fossils and dinosaur footprints were uncovered. For the geologist and Geography students eons... More

An interesting tour of the geology of this area created over millions of years and exposed in a few short days by a huge flood on Canyon Lake/Guadalupe river. Worth the time. Reservations must be made in advance.

As a current Geology student, I went here as a trip with my Geology class. The tour guides were very kind and knowledgeable about the area. This area was great to explore because of the unique history and the aspects of Geology to observe and learn about. We even got to see a unique fault on the tour. The area... More

Very fun hike! Tour guide discussed fossils, environmental, and some animal factors throughout the gorge. Nice cloudy day so we didn't get to hot. I would definitely account for weather if you'd like to partake, humidity is not your friend. We did see a fox on our hike as well as some hawks! Very cool!
