Do not expect to spend the afternoon pursuing this historical marker. While it is pretty cool, it is also just what it says it is and will occupy minutes of your day. Plenty of history to see in the area so not a wasted trip...More

Completed just two years after the close of the Civil War in 1866, this is the oldest Civil War monument in Texas, according to the Civil War Trust. It's also one of the few monuments honoring a group of people with Northern sympathies that's located...More

Commemorating the community of German immigrants, unwilling to sacrifice their convictions, who fled the confederacy for Mexico. Tragically almost all were slaughtered only a days ride from the Mexico border. Much information can be found at the Comfort Heritage Foundation.

Worth visiting to learn some of the history of Comfort from the American Civil War time. Local people were loyal to the American Union as the had pledged their allegiance to the Union when the emigrated to Texas in the 1840's.

We were told this but I don't know if it's true. It is true that German men were massacred by southern soldiers as they wanted no part in succession and tried to flee to Mexico. Interesting story and a sad part of our greater history.

The Treue Der Union is the ONLY Monument for the Civil War in the South. Original Comfort families fought and were killedin a short battle. However a very historic battle. Worth taking your time yo see.

This monument tells a tale I had never heard, having been born and raised in Texas. I am a Civil War buff, and was totally ignorant of this historically significant event. Well worth the time to come to Comfort and learn this hidden Civil War...More

A little known history of the German immigrants, who were known as Freethinkers, who settled in the Texas Hill Country. It is one of the few monuments in the South that honors Union losses. Take the time to read their story and pay homage to...More
