The old town of Alcala de Henares, which is located 31 KM north east of Madrid and a short train ride was historically interesting. Much of the town is World Heritage with a lot to see. it has a major university and many historical sights and good to just walk around

The main street of the town is great for wandering, eating, people watching or buying a trinket or two. It boasts Spain’s longest porticoed street. It is historically tied to the Jewish barrio. Of interest to locals and tourists alike is the home where the great author Cervantes was born. You will spend appreciable time here. It intersects with the Plaza de Cervantes. Look up too to the many second floor balconies.

Calle Mayor means "main street" in Spanish. In length (396 meters) it clearly doesn`t qualify for the title of main street. But we must remember that Alcala de Henares is not Madrid. For a small town, a small main street. The street owes its appearance to the Jews, who built a small town on this site in the XII century. Not from scratch: earlier, the Romans founded a Complutum on the Caesar-Augusta road from Zaragoza to Merida. There was no Madrid back then... Jewish merchants built two-in-one houses: a store or warehouse on the ground floor, living rooms on the first and second floors. Therefore, the houses have galleries of columns. Initially, the columns were taken from the Roman Complutum, then replaced with concrete ones in the XIX century. Now Calle mayor claims to be the longest street with galleries in Europe. There are mainly shops and cafes on the street. Immediately after Cervantes Square there is the house museum of the great writer. It's not real, it's a reconstruction, but on the land where the house where Cervantes was born used to stand. But Cervantes' father worked at the Antesan hospital, which also faces the street.

This is the longest street in the city, some 400 metres i believe, and it is still kept as it was few hundred years ago for most of it. There are a row of columns supporting houses on top at both sides of the street, a feature that is not found elsewhere in Spain anymore. This street looks especially pretty with the Christmas lights on.

The best thing of this place is to see the giant nest from storks(cigüeñas)in top of the buildings. Also the place has a lot of stores and places to eat.

This main street and the Plaza Cervantes are the hub of old town Alcala where people meet, sit in the cafes and shop. We were in Alcala for several days and it was always busy and buzzy. It has unusual colonnades on both sides, is pedestrianised and has lots of street cafes, bars and restaurants. There a well known sculpture of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in the middle that gives a photo and selfie opportunity for everyone.

Will all the shops and cafe bars be open on Monday 1 May, a public holiday?
Written January 5, 2017
Hi there, the bars and restaurants will be open but not the shops. Being a Monday, usually a day of rest for restaurant owners, if you plan on visiting any specific restaurant I would check their web sight if they have one, just in case. Also be aware that the 2nd of May is a bank holiday in the Comunidad de Madrid. Rgds
