An easy drive from Segovia gets you into the Sierra Guadarrama national park. There is also a train from Madrid to Los Cotos. There is a mountain info centre at Los Cotos and 5/6 walks start from here. Even with a little snow around, the walk to the Pic at Penalara was easy to follow. Tough in places but generally... More

I had planned for a trek in cercedilia during the weekend but a nice chat with a friendly passenger in the train made me aware of this place and I went up to Cotos for a hike to Penalara. Once you reach cotos railway station you can visit the rangers office for tourist information, trekking maps. There is a bar... More

We visited this area of the Guadarrama National Park (not that far from Madrid) on a birding tour. We made a number of stops and finally we walked to the Cirque higher up. Very nice trail and landscapes. Towards the end of the trail on a relative easy climb you get to the cirque area with impressive rocks and nice... More

A nice walk and a good hike. Many people had their bikes and seemed like they were enjoying it quite a bit. If you going for it in the summer, go early when it is cool othewise you may be miserable.

I've just taken an alpine safety course conducted in the park. The park itself is accessible through the Puerto Los Cotos entrance. Buses from Madrid go to Puerto Los Cotos from Moncloa - check online for line 691 for departure times. Ample parking may also be found near the Venta Marcelino inn. The inn is a favorite amongst hikers and... More

A fabulous spot so close to Madrid, with walks for everyone. Maps available from the info centre, though hard to find online and generally in Spanish. Well worth it, a prime day out from Madrid.

There are two great aspects of the Park as I saw it - getting there and being there. !. Getting there. There are three park offices and I have only been to the one near Los Cotos station. This involves two trains on RENFE's Madrid Cercanias routes. I started from Atochas and the times and cost given are from there... More
