Purple Mountains Majesty!!!!!!! and Stripes Too

Dr. Seuss could have designed this short amazing stretch of road, and that is all it is, in and out, a drive on another planet, truly wonderful, only if road is dry.

Took the drive out to the old townof Pareah that was devastasted by flood back in the 1930s. There was a movie set nearby that was ravaged by fire and never rebuilt. Oh, a graveyard is present with aging, often illegible tombstones and the only thing close to a photo-op.

So why is this even on the list of attractions to consider? It has an interesting history, but is not much now.

The movie set is gone, but the hike to the river to see the ghost town is worth it! Hint: turn right by the river, not left, and you'll get there much quicker :)

There is no longer any visible signs of the town. The best time to go is late in the day when the sun is shining on the cliffs.

It is an easy drive and BEAUTIFUL. Sad that the original movie sets were vandalized/burned, but glad they were rebuilt. The information at Old Paria tells about the fire and the community rebuilding "in another location" but doesn't specify the other location. Maybe the museum? It would be nice if they would add that info.

We took this road a little slower than the 45 mph sign as the road was rutted and bumpy as we proceeded further in. Definitely worth the trip...gorgeous scenery abounds!

We found Old Paria from very a very informative hand-out distributed by the local Kanab community at the local supermarket (Honeys). It's a half hour drive out of Kanab on US89, and then on a dirt road for ~5 miles. As long as it has not rained recently, you can drive the road in a standard passenger car. The scenery... More

This is a don't miss 4 mile drive, especially in late afternoon lighting. You will take many many photos and stop every few minutes to take photos. We saw no other car there during our entire time there. Gravel road but easy to drive.
