This is the only trail accessible without a Navajo guide. It goes into the valley and then loops around the East Mitten. I did it about 3 hours after sunrise. It was good, but would have been better in better light (and less heat).

We took a sunrise hike on Wildcat Trail. A great time me to drink in the serenity and beauty of Monument Valley at a much cooler temp. The hike is relatively easy with the only challenge being the sandy hills on the way back. Bring...More

This is a mostly flat easy trail. The hardest part is walking out up trough the sand dune, not bad. The trail brings you up close to the valley floor and the life you can't see from the rim. A lot of the plant life...More

Flat trail for the most part. What goes up must come down. When you start the trail, you'll be walking down a sandy slope...you'll have to walk up that on the way back. It's not that bad...you may have to take a few breathers. At...More

This is the only trail visitors can go on unaccompanied by Native guides. It's about 3.5 miles long or so and goes around the Mitten formation that's closest to the hotel. Except for getting to and from the campground/trail start, it's pretty flat. Sand and...More

My husband and I stayed at The View Hotel, which is just a short distance from the trail head. We used this trail as our daily morning walk, and loved it. It is very picturesque, taking you around the iconic west mitten. You will also...More

If you walk the entire trail, it goes around the left mitten and is about 3 miles (not counting the walk from The View to the trail head, which is a ways). You can walk to the mitten and back if you don't want to...More

After dealing with the crowds around the View Hotel and on the loop road (I took a tour...excellent guide, but lots of traffic and crowds at the popular stops), this was the experience I wanted at Monument Valley...peace and beauty. The hike is not difficult;...More

Nice hike that provides a good perspective of the western mitten. Good way to stretch the legs on a 3.5 mile hike. Provides good views across the desert floor and to other monuments.

A very nice trail which circumnavigates the 'West Mitten Butte' in Monument Valley next to the View Hotel. First 2/3 was a bit up and down but no great grades, generally pretty even. Last third back up was a bit strenuous but this 65 year...More

Check the temp for that day. I'd start early enough to beat the heat. It's a great hike. There were only a few people on the trail. Carry enough water too. Enjoy!

Park anywhere in the lot where the various tours gather (or I think there is a small dirt parking area at the trailhead. The trailhead is just past where the dirt loop road into Monument Valley starts (this is just before... More

Can we hike a short distance on the trail and turn around? Depending on the weather we might want to do a mile and a half round trip, but not the whole trail. Going in early May. Probably wearing athletic shoes, not hiking boots. Thanks

This is a great trail. I think doing part of the trail is good! Doing any trail, part or all, is good! It is sandy in a few parts. I hiked in trail running shoes and was fine. Enjoy your hike but please take plenty of water!!
