On the spur of the moment my daughter and I decided to take the ferry over from Ticonderoga to the shores of Vermont to explore the heavily wooded Mt. Independence State Historic Site. Are we ever glad we did! Cloudless skies and hot temps made the perfect combination for a ferry ride over to Vermont and Mt. Independence. We were... More

Then you will love this terrific piece of America. It is a pristine area that is virtually unchanged since 1777. It was a critical part of the Revolutionary War. Certainly worthwhile for history buffs but great for anyone who loves hiking and great vistas of Lake Champlain. The only restroom is in the visitor center .The visitor center is open... More

Beautifully groomed grounds both natural and preserved areas. Three levels of walking trails that include some suited for wheelchairs and strollers. Taking the Baldwin Trail there are kiosk signs explaining what you are seeing. The scenic overlook has a grand view of Ft. Ticonderoga in NY and a picnic table for a picnic lunch like we did. We decided to... More

If you like to hike, you can easily spend 4+ hours on the trails. Some are easy & wheelchair accessible. Some are a bit more "rustic". Be prepared to back-track to visit all the informational stops. Make sure you grab a map, bring water and your camera. Don't forget to leave time to go through the museum and see the... More

Nestled in the Champlain Valley, Mount Independence State Historic Site Is one of the best preserved and most important revolutionary war site in the country. Tours are self guided on all of the trails throughout the park. Two of the trails are handicapped or stroller accessible. Bring a good pair of walking shoes, bug spray and binoculars. There are also... More

We had heard that visiting Ft. Ticonderoga, NY was a MUST, however equally important is visiting Mt. Independence, located across Lake Champlain from Ft. Ti. It is a beautiful area with several trails of different lengths throughout the acreage and informative signs. The Visitor's Center offers a lot of activities.

This seems like sacred ground, walking through the woods where Revolutionary War soldiers once lived. The visitor center is modern and fascinating.

Excellent museum/visitors center. Lots of interesting trials for hiking/walking. Wonderful overlook view of Fort Ticonderoga. One can really begin to appreciate the complexities of the battles that took place in the area. I strongly recommend reading up on the history to really appreciate all that is in front of you.

I am researching a guy who fought at this site in 1777 and wanted to experience the place for myself. My husband, myself, and my twelve year old brother came here with a picnic lunch, a camera, and hiking shoes and had a great time. One suggestion I have for someone looking to go here is to wait for good... More

My husband and I visited Mount Independence on July 18th. We started at the Visitor's Center, which is constructed in the shape of a bateaux. They had an interesting film as well as an exhibit of soldiers in the center of the room. It seemed to have film projected onto the faces which brought the soldiers to life. On one... More
