A bit of an effort to get there but well worth the trip. Absolutely beautiful on a fall day. Smaller in size than most wineries, but that's a very good thing. Small size means small crowds which gives the staff the opportunity to present a very personal, very knowledgeable wine tasting of some excellent wines, all made from Virginia-grown grapes.... More

One of the southern-most vineyards in the Charlottesville area, we arrived at 11am (opening time) on Sunday and had the place to ourselves until we left about noon. Nice chance to chat with the staff and sample good wine. Bought several cases. Reclaimed wood floors and wooden dining table from Civil War era provide historic ambiance. Highly recommended.

We recently stopped here for a wine tasting. The person who did our tasting was very knowledgeable. He was friendly. The tastings gave us a variety of choices. We would recommend this winery and we would purchase wine from here again.

We stopped by First Colony after a visit to Monticello earlier that day. Our itinerary that afternoon included Trump (very good), Michael Shaps (also very good), and finally First Colony. Tasting room - the tasting room was nice, but not overly large or fancy. There was plenty of room to accommodate everyone. The young man pouring for us was friendly... More

My wife and I visited 6 wineries in the area over the weekend and we particularly liked First Colony because it was a little smaller, the people were very nice and the wine was very good and less expensive than some of the other wineries. It is well worth the stop.

Friendly people, they are making very good wine now. I'm an ex-Virginian who treks to VA yearly to go get wine-was there when they first opened and it was so-so. Now it's a destination

Awesome tasting room!! At one point there was many people in the tasting room, but they were able to move everyone around so everyone had room to stand and felt comfortable. VERY knowledgeable person pouring (I forgot his name). Great, Great wines, and a very nice smaller stop vs. a larger factory run winery such as nearby Trump.

Had visited First Colony many years ago and we weren't impressed. However, since it is right next door to Michael Shaps Wineworks, we decided to stop in again after visiting Michael Shaps. What a great surprise! The wines are much better now. The tasting room is lovely and the fellow that provided our tasting was great. Very personable and funny.... More

Granted, we only made it to three, but this was the highlight. We had never tried Virginia wines before (although we've been to quite a few wineries throughout the country), and we were VERY pleasantly surprised by what we found here. We walked away with four whites and a rose, as well as a couple reds. The tasting room manager... More
