About
In 1774 Thomas Jefferson and Filippo Mazzei created Virginia's first commercial wine company and vineyard on our estate. Four decades ago, we introduced quality modern viticulture to Virginia. Our wines range from delicate and refreshing, to elegant, full-bodied and rich. We are one of the highest awarded Virginia wineries for Viognier (the state grape). In 2001 we bottled one of Virginia's first Petit Verdot varietals. We continue extensive experimentation with these two varietals, skin fermented white wines and a range of small batch estate reserve wines that reflect the best of our Virginia terroir. We are located 1 mile from Monticello and Jame's Monroe's Highland Estate.

Average Winery

Nice average wines. It’s scenic and had various cheeses and crackers for sale to enjoy with your wine. Staff was friendly and prices for flights were reasonable. All outside tasting and seating, due to COVID. There are tents and large umbrellas to shelter from the sun or rain. Some wines are sold at the local grocery stores for a cheaper price.

Good wines and relaxing views
Aug. 2021 • Couples
Our first stop on our wine tour! It was a great way to start our trip. We were offered a self guided tasting and got the red and the white flights. We were served outside and offered outdoor seating with mountain views. We enjoyed all of the wines we tasted and even purchased a few bottles to take home. Wines were more expensive than we remembered from the last time we were there.

Perfect respite from sightseeing!
Aug. 2021
Jefferson Vineyards was the perfect place to sit and relax with a glass of very good wine while enjoying beautiful scenery. The setting is awesome. It is a very large property, with lots of places to sit with enough distance between the tables to feel like you are not listening to someone’s conversations. There is a lovely garden area, but we sat on the hilltop, which has tables spread over a lovely large area. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We are a group of 3 couples so we obviously have very different preferences in wine. We all found something we really liked…the Chardonnay Reserve 2019, the Riesling 2019 and the Rose 2019 seem to be particular favorites. We had a cheese ball and crackers…very good and just hit the spot after a day of sightseeing. We cannot recommend this place enough and hope to return soon.

Charming way to spend an afternoon.
Jul. 2021
Spent a lovely afternoon at this vineyard. We bought a bottle of wine and some cheese crackers then sat on the hilltop to enjoy the food, wine and view.
Recommend this as a pleasant break from sightseeing.

Delicious wine!

We liked their wines very much! Buying a glass was more economical than taste flights. Anbience average. A nice spot that is very close to Monticello. Friendly staff

Very Nice Wine
Jul. 2021
The wine here is very good. The prices are fair and the staff are wonderful. Grab a flight and go sit in the shade or the sun and enjoy nature with your loved ones.

Enjoyable Experience
Jun. 2021
Really enjoyed the visit. People were friendly and had good recommendations. Enjoyed the tasting out in the tables overlooking the winery and farmland. Bought a bottle for the road. Will stop back in when in Charlottesville again.

Perfect place to regroup
Jun. 2021 • Friends
After a long, hot day at Monticello, this vineyard was the perfect spot to cool off in the shade while enjoying a delightful flight of wines and beautiful views. The staff was authentic, helpful and friendly. In addition, the souvenir wine glass was the perfect addition to my collection. My favorite wine was the Rose.

Poor Service on Very Windy Day
Apr. 2021 • Couples
My wife and I visited for a wine tasting and it was so windy we ended up in our car. Here are our observations from today’s visit:

* Of course it was not the Vineyard’s fault it was so windy - but they should have used a tent with a partial plastic buffer on 2 or 3 sides

* We ordered one wine tasting and I can only say that even for 1 person the amounts were pretty small - and in plastic cups - kinda tacky

* We ordered crackers, cheese and Genoa salami. It was definitely self serve today because it’s not easy to open a bar of cheese with a plastic knife. Fortunately we had scissors in the car. You could tell the crackers weren’t very fresh because they just broke apart and crumbled. Point being - they could have cut up what we ordered and served it in a way that was a little more convenient and customer friendly

Overall just a big disappointment. I realize serving outside in today’s environment is a challenge but the owners of this vineyard should give a little more thought to how they are serving/treating their customers. This was our first visit to this vineyard so maybe today was just an “off-day” for them

We went to Gabriele Rausse vineyard afterwards and the experience was so much better and well thought out.

Thank you for your review and for personally emailing our team with your concerns. This week we transitioned to a new Virginia dairy purveyor called Locksley Farmstead. Their packaging is perforated and easier to open. Our food license allows us to serve pre-packed food items only. Although, there is a local country store called Simeon Market right next to our entrance, and they offer delicious prepared meals. Outside food is always welcome. Our flights are 1.5 ounces of wine per cup totaling 6 ounces. It also includes a logo'd glass. It was unfortunate that your visit coincided with 50 Mph wind gusts. Many VA wineries experienced loss of their tents and other property damage on that day. We would love to have you back to re-experience Jefferson Vineyards on a more perfect day.
