About
In 1774 Thomas Jefferson and Filippo Mazzei created Virginia's first commercial wine company and vineyard on our estate. Four decades ago, we introduced quality modern viticulture to Virginia. Our wines range from delicate and refreshing, to elegant, full-bodied and rich. We are one of the highest awarded Virginia wineries for Viognier (the state grape). In 2001 we bottled one of Virginia's first Petit Verdot varietals. We continue extensive experimentation with these two varietals, skin fermented white wines and a range of small batch estate reserve wines that reflect the best of our Virginia terroir. We are located 1 mile from Monticello and Jame's Monroe's Highland Estate.

Lovely visit to this winery! The staff and management have taken extra efforts in terms of health and safety precautions (masks, distance, deep cleaning tables and chairs between patrons). I recommend making an online reservation because if they are busy they won’t be able to take walk-ups. The deposit you pay for a reservation online can be used toward your purchase of a bottle so it all evens out. Bottle and flights only (no wine by the glass at this time for safety precaution reasons). We enjoyed sipping a nice, cold Viognier beneath the trees and appreciated all the friendly staff members.

Thank you for your review and visit. We are glad we made you feel welcome and safe. Soon we will be releasing our 2019 Viognier (also from a great vintage). We are happy to announce that we've started selling wine by the glass (8 select wines, including some of our flight wines). We look forward to welcoming you again soon.

I wrote a review of Jefferson Vineyards a couple years ago after having a decidedly average experience. I’m coming back to write a new review, because during the pandemic, this is one of the very few places I actually and thoroughly enjoy visiting.

This season we’ve only had the dry rosé and viognier, but both wines were absolutely exceptional this year.

During these strange times, when you pull up, you are greeted by a host who gives you the run down of how things have been adapted to keep their staff and patrons safe. I cannot overstate what a great job they’re doing with precautions. That attendant is also turning away people when they’ve reached a conservative capacity, which, to me, just shows incredible integrity.

Thank you for your review and kind words about our staff (all of whom try very hard to provide a great experience). We are delighted to read how safe you felt with us and are honored you have decided to keep visiting us during these times. Our approach to limiting capacity (and close our gates when a conservative capacity is reached) is to ensure our patrons enjoy themselves, knowing there is plenty of space to keep them safe. Glad you enjoyed our Rose and Viognier. The 2019 Viognier is especially delicious :-) We are now also open Thursdays (2PM - 6PM) through Mid November.

We had a great visit to Jefferson Vineyards. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck with our wine. The wines we tasted were delicious and reasonably priced. The views are great and the staff were extremely friendly. Would recommend it and its close proximity to Monticello makes it a great stop before or after visiting Monticello

We arrived and the two gentleman directing traffic were so informative, and friendly. Ordered a tasting and sat in the chairs enjoying the view. This was the great part of our visit.... then, when we were done, we proceeded to head to our car as we saw they were getting busy. As we walked to our car, a worker, which I’m assuming is the owner or manager with dark long hair was yelling at the worker directing traffic about an couple that had a newly born baby with them. She said in a rude tone that he was supposed to make sure everyone in the car was over 21! She was causing a scene, and a lot of us were shocked. He remained polite and proceeded to say he did ask; he didn’t see the baby, which is understandable bc due to COVID19, it’s unlikely you are putting your head in the car. Then it became worst... when she proceeded to approach the couple, and in the rudest tone scolded them like they were children, and told them everyone must be 21 and that it’s clearly listed on their website! She then said she would make this one exception still in a rude unfriendly tone. The couple looked confused, and so defeated to be spoken to in such a manner. My daughter and I were shocked at how rude she was and saw the couple was still standing by their car when we left contemplating whether they should stay, or go. Based upon her behavior, and continued rudeness, we won’t go again! I feel bad for the employees who were treated awfully, and the patrons there who had to listen to her yelling and rudeness. Kindness goes a long way, she could have discreetly discussed it with the employee and the couple. To yell at a unknowingly couple as they are putting a sleeping baby in a stroller is unacceptable behavior.

Thank you for your kind words about our greeting staff. We are glad to read you enjoyed our beautiful views and your time with us before departing. As with any review, we check each account carefully with our staff to ensure an accurate response. We are a 21 years and older (no babies and children allowed) facility at present. This policy is clearly stated online and offline. Our greeter asks each driver whether everyone in the car is 21 and over and this couple did not disclose they had a baby in their car before parking. Despite this, the manager you are referring to made an exception and allowed them and their baby to remain on our property as they were meeting up with a friend. They stayed for two hours, under a nice green tent. It is our understanding they were grateful and had a good time with us. Our Managers and staff take our policies seriously and are required to enforce them. Perhaps you mistook rudeness with being strong willed and direct. I can personally assure you both the Manager and the greeter get along very well and have a wonderful working relationship. Regardless, we will continue doing our best to ensure we are more carefully checking and confirming everyone is 21 years and older. We all need empathy and understanding nowadays, even our very hard working manager who does her best each day.

I enjoyed the wine tasting. The person pouring was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She was able to give many suggestions of foods that the wines could be paired with. Prices were reasonable. The grounds were nice. Nice souvenir wine glasses. I would return.

Jefferson Vineyards was the perfect place to sit and relax with a glass of very good wine while enjoying beautiful scenery. The setting is awesome. It is a very large property, with lots of places to sit with enough distance between the tables to feel like you are not listening to someone’s conversations. There is a lovely garden area, but we sat on the hilltop, which has tables spread over a lovely large area. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We are a group of 3 couples so we obviously have very different preferences in wine. We all found something we really liked…the Chardonnay Reserve 2019, the Riesling 2019 and the Rose 2019 seem to be particular favorites. We had a cheese ball and crackers…very good and just hit the spot after a day of sightseeing. We cannot recommend this place enough and hope to return soon.

Nice average wines. It’s scenic and had various cheeses and crackers for sale to enjoy with your wine. Staff was friendly and prices for flights were reasonable. All outside tasting and seating, due to COVID. There are tents and large umbrellas to shelter from the sun or rain. Some wines are sold at the local grocery stores for a cheaper price.

Thank you for your review and your kind words about our offerings. Did you also try our award winning wines - Viognier 2019, Cabernet Franc 2017 and 2019, Estate Reserve 2017? These wines are more premium and we think you might enjoy them on your next visit. Most, are not available in stores.

My husband and I eagerly picked up the new 2019 Reisling yesterday and were super excited to try it. First time Jefferson Vineyards has made it in several years. I just want you all to know that it did not disappoint! Soooo delicious! Smooth and crisp and definitely the highlight of our day...and week! Sometimes wine doesn’t taste as good at home, away from the ambience of a winery, but not so with Jefferson wines! The 2018 Viognier has been my favorite VA wine this year, but now I may have a new front runner. If you’re a white wine drinker, Jefferson Vineyard has really tasty options!
I’m so glad they offer curbside/ shipping right now, and we look forward to spending time at the winery soon!

What a wonderful review to read! Thank you. We are so grateful for your feedback. Both the Viognier 2018 and Riesling 2019 are favorites. Our Riesling fruit is tricky during harvest because of our elevation (600 feet), but 2019 was a stellar year and it really shows in the wine. We can't wait to see you on our grounds when we can safely open up again.

This vineyard is, unsurprisingly, the exact vineyard where Thomas Jefferson grew – or tried to grow – grapes for wine. It’s about a 4-minute drive from Monticello (though we have to remember that the Monticello estate when Jefferson owned it was absolutely massive, at several thousand acres, or about 8sq mi.). The place offers a great selection of wines to drink by the glass, bottle, or tasting flight. The snack box you can get to accompany the wine(s) may seem quite expensive, just a captive audience price, but once you actually look at the quantity and quality of cheese, jam, and crackers that come in the box, it’s not unreasonable at all. Though the wine tasting flights seem to be rigid, you can switch out one wine for another (the flights are all the same price). There’s great outdoor seating and the place is kid-friendly and amenable to leashed, well-behaved dogs. There’s plenty of parking, too. They can package wines sold by the bottle if necessary, and they might ship, too. The only downside is that they don’t have water from a fountain that they can fill in cups for guests; you have to buy bottled water. One word of advice: the roads nearby are beautiful, but they are narrow, curvy, and hilly, so be extra careful and do not leave the place if you are buzzed or drunk!

Traveling with two kids and two dogs can be a challenge. Being a mom and trying to find the right spots to travel with two kids and two dogs in the winter can be an even bigger challenge!

There are some amazing Dog Friendly guides to Charlottesville available. If they leave out Jefferson Vineyards it’s a shame!

We had a fantastic time visiting the vineyards and our dogs were both welcome. The staff made them feel right at home - immediately offering milkbones to welcome them.

The juice flight for the kids and the coloring activities were awesome. We carry card games with us everywhere when we travel. But the coloring was a nice change of pace.

Great experience. Highly recommend. We will be back!
