Built in 1936, The State Theatre operated as a popular movie until the late 1980's. The first film shown was Thanks A Million starring Dick Powell and on November 27, 1988 the State closed its doors after a final showing of Die Hard starring Bruce Willis. The first theatre on the East Coast to be centrally air-conditioned, the State was the flagship of the family-owned Neighborhood Theatres chain which also operated, among others, the Glebe (now a Duron paint store), the Buckingham (now a Post Office) and the Jefferson (now a Chile's restaurant). A multi-million dollar restoration in the late 1990's turned it into the Washington Metro area's favorite new venue for live music and private events. The full theatrical stage is original, as are the 200 balcony seats and both lobbies. The theatre seats on the main floor were removed to allow for the re-design of the auditorium which now accommodates full service dining, standing and dancing areas and two full service bars. The restoration also added a full service restaurant for dining and catering private events.

Cool venue

This was a cool place to see a show. I love when people take old theaters and give them new life, even if they do only have off the beaten path bands. It's nice for 90s nostalgia!

We went here to see Jonny Lang it was the perfect sized venue. Dinner reservations were available and reserved tables (which sell out fast) offered the best seating down on the floor level by the stage but then it's crowded down there so we sat in the balcony. The concert was sold out so it was a full house but... More

I have been here several times and it's actually quite nice. Friday night's with the Legwarmers is a real treat. I wish there were more places like this in the Northern Virginia area.

So fun. Saw the legwarmers. Definitely going to go see them again. How often do you go to a concert where you know every song? They are talented. The venue is awesome. Cheers.

Great place to see local artist as well as nationally known. Surrounded by great restaurants and public transportation (buses, metro).

OK food, beer in an old-fashioned cinema building. With the right friends and the right band, can be lot's of fun.

It's a good venue. Small and cozy so everyone can get a good look at the act. However, acoustics could be much better. Appreciate that such a place exists in the subirbs of VA.

This is not only a local venue for live music. This is one of the best in the whole Washington DC area. I am just wondering why they are not doing more of the big names show and/or music and (independent) movies festivals. I understand that the Birchmere in Alexandria has already got this market niche. But, given the quality... More

Great place to catch a show. They usually have older or cover bands but it's cheap and convenient to a lot of restaurants in the city to eat beforehand

The State Theatre hosts concerts every weekend with both local and traveling bands. I go there regularly to see a local 80's tribute band, with a full house. Even when packed for events there is still enough breathing room in the lobby areas to get some air. The bar service is quick and reasonably priced. Make sure you park in... More
