Gari Melchers was an American artist who lived and painted at Belmont from 1916 until his death in 1932. Born in Detroit in 1860, Gari Melchers was a world famous portraitist and impressionist painter. He was headquartered in Paris, Holland, and Germany until World War I when he opened his studio in New York City and established his country home in Falmouth. In 1955, his widow, Corinne Melchers, donated the 27-acre Belmont property to the Commonwealth of Virginia to preserve and operate as an art museum and historic site. Her generous gift included the 1790s house, the artist's studio and contents, their personal furnishings, and more than 500 of Gari Melchers' paintings, the largest collection anywhere. Designated a Virginia and National Historic Landmark in 1966, Gari Melchers Home and Studio is administered by the University of Mary Washington. The buildings, gardens, and woodland trails are open to the public year round.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is one of just 30 of America's most significant artists' spaces included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists' Homes and Studios consortium.Gari Melchers Home and Studio is home to the official Stafford County Visitor Center.

My friend and I visited this wonderful attraction. The guides were all great. The stories told are interesting. There is a building that is also an art gallery. The exhibits there are not just older work, but more modern artists, too (they even had a wonderful comic artist's exhibit). There is a nice gift shop and outside there's a little... More

Nice change from civil war historical sites. Many of his original paintings are shown here; the paintings typically are of everyday peasant activities, portraits and landscapes - Easy to appreciate and beautiful. His home is also interesting, and is decorated just as he lived there. This stop is well worth visiting, and is one of the 9 sites included as... More

Amazing that one of the worlds most premier artist of his time, with a studio in NYC, ended up with a country house just across the river from Fredericksburg. Interesting house and gardens with trails in the woods. Amazing that the melchers left their property to the State with their furnishings. This is something a little different than all the... More

This is a "YOU CAN'T MISS THIS!" attraction! Even if you aren't that in to art - the history, beauty of the home and grounds are worth experiencing. But, if you are an artist or just an art lover (like me) you will definitely enjoy spending some significant time at the Gari Melchers Home and Studio. Staff were very engaging... More

aside from his realist/impressionist style Gari Melchers was a force in American art including his participation as an art leader in the US and helping the Smithsonian land some great collections - I loathe anything historical but was fascinated by the life of Gari and Corrine. the house and studio are accessible and totally not overwhelming, so this is a... Our initial reason for visiting Belmont was to tour a historic home. Quite frankly, we knew nothing of Gari Melchers or his art. We were able to spend a lovely autumn afternoon on premises. A 15-minute movie in the admission/ gift shop building gives a basic introduction to the man and his art, providing a nice context for the house... More
