Midelt seems to be in the midpoint between Fez and the desert town of Merzouga. We figured we'd stop for lunch, but our guidebook mentioned an embroidery workshop run by the last of the Franciscan nuns in an old convent in town. Nicole Debono continues to run the workshop. She's a third generation Morrocan of French descent and is the guiding hand that organizes the young girls who train in embroidery and rug making for as many as seven years before being certified as masters. It gives them a livelihood that helps keep them out of poverty while preserving these amazing traditional skills.

The quality of the workmanship (work-womanship) is superb. Beyond anything you'll see in the shops of Marrakech and Fez. Nicole explains and shows the process of how nearly everything is made.

If you're stopping in Midelt for any reason, it's worth stopping in at this workshop!

Highly skilled women have learned fabulous skills & create special needlework embroidery & weaving tablecloths, place-mats, napkins & carpets, etc., to provide income for their families. The Franciscan Sisters that operate this school hold a unique history of being responsive to local community needs throughout the years (orphanage, school, etc.). Great gift shop to find special, uniquely handcrafted gifts to bring back home. Beautifully spirited women! I highly recommend a visit to this remarkable place.

The place is worth visiting. The women there do a great job. Unlike most places in Morocco that are highly touristic and commercial here we found real people trying to change their lives and their world. A truly moving effort.

Do not go into this shop, and don't be fooled by the guidebooks that talk about nuns helping local women - this is a for-profit outfit, and these are NOT friendly nuns. When we visited, the owner of this place, Nicole, saw an opportunity to rip us off while her assistant talked us up, and only packed up half of what we bought. We contacted her when we found out, and of course, she wouldn't send us the rest of our purchase - which wasn't cheap, btw. I can't believe these women cheated us. So - BUYER BEWARE.

The needlework is amazing and well worth the price the atelier asks if you know anything about needlework.

The workshop was closed for Labor Day, but we were happy to listen to how the wool is sourced, processed, and woven into rugs.

Proceeds benefit the community; you can't go wrong.
