You may have learned of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, but it's the only time I heard of the "Field of Shoes." A must see for historians and tourists.

The first thing you should do here is view the video presentation. It lays a foundation for everything else you will see here. Most Civil War Museums are similar, but this is different because it highlights the VMI cadets and their contribution to this New Market Battle , which is next door. Be sure not to skip the actual battlefield... More

A private collection which turned into a museum. Not just the Civil War is covered here. Earlier materials from Colonial times and later times are also represented. If everyone in the Civil War got their pictures taken, half of them must be in this museum. The amount of information and items concentrated in one space will blow your mind. For... More

First, warning! There are two attractions here, and they're next to each other. This is the Battlefield Military Museum and it's a museum. You are NOT touring the battlefield here. What it is, is a display of someone's fabulous collection of military stuff, most of it from the Civil War, but there is a large amount of other historical artifacts as... Very good museum overlooking the battlefield. 45 minute video. Many exhibits in one area were missing, being renovated or replaced or incomplete. Complete walk of the battlefield is easy and covers close to 3 miles. Much of it can be done by car with several stops for closer examination of buildings and explanation of the battle.

Passed this attraction many times on I-81 and finally took the time to stop in. Glad we did. The 45 minute video was very informative and worth the time to watch. Interesting to go in the house and walk around the out buildings. We drove down to the farm museum area rather than walk from the visitors center to cut... More

The museum is rich in artifacts and memorabilia and the walking tour of the nearby battlefield and farmhouse which was used as a field hospital is very good. Highly recommend! Wear walking shoes It is right off the exit for New Market on route 81 near the beautiful and scenic Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. I recommend giving yourself... More

Very interesting movie about the battle of the lost shoes. We had been lucky to meet a Bushong decendant at breakfast who had suggested we visit the museum and we were not disappointed.

Walk in the field where the VMI cadets marched on the Bushong farm behind the museum. Watch the docudrama depicting this event. Tour the museum rich with the Civil War history, artifacts, and flags. The architectural style of drum and guns is amazing and so appropriate for the museum. The site director, Major Troy Marshall, is a true asset to... More
