Nice place to have a stroll around!

We visited in September and to go into the grounds and castle, it has to be weekends only. But you can walk right around the outer walkway of the castle walls, but the last bit is on a wall that drops away both sides. But well worth a visit.

Lovely walk and scenery
May 2018 • Couples
We thoroughly enjoyed our walk around St Vaast's La Hogue fort peninsula.
At a very leisurely pace it took and hour: stunning coastal views, a slice of history, saying "bonjour" to fellow walkers, negotiating narrow pathways - everything contributed to a lovely, memorable experience.
We walked from the centre of St Vaast, which added another hour, although parking is easy closer to the fort itself.
Part of the walk is on what at a distance seems like the top of a knife-edge-wide wall/sea defence, but is actually around a metre wide at its narrowest. That all added to the fun! (Nervous walkers beware though.)
A really lovely walk around a historic peninsula with super views.

Superb location
May 2018 • Family
Just south of St-Vaast on a peninsula is La Houge. When we were visiting, there were works going on at the tower so we could not go right around the Vauban fortress.

If we had been able to go right round, I would have given this attraction five stars as it was really interesting.

One of two towers in this town strategically sited to defend the harbour from a sea bourne attack and well worth a walk around and up and down

Could be a nice hike...

...but the while place is now the home of a gypsie settlement... To be avoided unless you're fascinated with trailers, second hand Mercedes/bmw and satellite dishes.

An easy walk, but don't bring Granny.

A gentle stroll around the old fortifications of St Vaast, but there are places where you have to walk along the tops of walls about two feet wide. Not Blondin stuff, but not for the unsure of their footing.

Worth a visit!

A nice 15/20 minute walk along the seashore will lead you there. There is a beach just next to the fort and a pavillion where you can buy water and snacks nearby. There was a special opening to support sea rescuers, so we could visit the entire site, but I understood that only parts of it are accessible at normal times, as it is still a functioning military site.

A good walk, not for the fainthearted

There were a good number of locals out doing the walk. I read the warning notice in french about not tackling this if the sea was rough(it was repeated in english but in very small lettering. The walk started off pleasant enough, then progressed on to the seaward side where the path became elevated for several hundred yards with the sea on one side and the deep ditch on the other, no rails and in parts narrowing to about 2 feet, with a wind blowing we were pleased to complete it, it took us about 70 minutes with stops for photographs, but we are a retired couple.

Beautiful coastal views as you walk along the Hougue. Perfect for a walk after a large Sunday lunch in the autumn sun.

Nice walk

It will take you 20 minutes walking from the town to reach the fort on the peninsula. You can follow the road, or take the walk on the wall (which is definetly better, as you can climb down the stairs or rocks, during low tides). Dont enter on the main entrance, as it is military zone. Instead, follow the sea and the wall, and you will go around the Fort and find the way in to it, with the possibility to visit the tower. Plan two hours if youre a fast walker and want to see it all.
