This kastro is not like any other castle. It doesn't have battlements or the usually castle walls. Instead the outer fortifications are houses built by the Venetian lords. The whole area is amazing with only three gates into it and a tower in the midst, th upper storeys of which have been removed. It makes for an interesting visit and... More

The Chora Castle, also called Kastro, has Venetian origins and it is now a shopping area. The wall surrounding the fortress is pentagonal and has three gates. The tower protecting the fortress stands near the northwestern gate and extends in part along the western and northern side of the fortress. The castle is always open, the Town Council organises traditional... More

Not recommend if your tagging along children (impossible to tour with a children's stroller)!!! We were searching for the castle, constantly going uphill, when a local told us we were already in the castle! I guess it would be OK if you were alone just passing time!

You can't miss the Castle is up the hill from anywhere in Naxos town or in the port; it has great views of the town and seaport. There are several museums, shops, restaurants and lots of little narrow street that run through the Castle to explore. There is a small theatre in the castle with outdoor seating overlooking the water.... More

My husband an I were trying to make our way back to our accomodation and passed through this area. We got tremendously lost which usually would be a pain but the small alleyways and scattered shops where stunning. We are so glad we passed through! Be warned though we didn't have a map and it took us around an hour... More

The Kastro area dates back to 1305 and sending a hour or more exploring the area is well worth while however you must have strong legs as there are many steps. Places to look for are; the Byzantine Muaeum, Refurbished Ursulin School with many art exhibitions,( depending on the time of year), The Archaeological Museum, and Cafe 1739 because it's... More

Beautiful archways, narrow alleys, towers and walls. Wander and imagine what life was like in Venetian time. Do not miss visiting.
