Over-looking the bay of Machico lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a spectacular 27 hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. The MACHICO and the DESERTAS courses are the ones usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS course, though slightly plain, maintains the same game level.

Nice winter rounds

Very nice package of seven rounds including transportation from/to Funchal. Friendly staff. Greens in very good condition. Weather could have been warmer.

Played this twice during a trip to Madeira. Weather not great by local standards but perfect for golf by UK expectations so we had the course largely to ourselves. Lots of challenges, but not impossible...apart from the putting! It took us a while to adjust to the pacy, slopy greens. Friendly, easy to organise hire clubs, no problem with tee... More

The clubhouse is very welcoming and the staff are super serviceminded! We rebooked almost all of our tee-times with no worries. They arranged pickup and return-transfer to our hotel at any time. We had the "unlimited 7-days golf" package and played 27-36 holes a day. It was calm with no rush and no marshals picking at you at the course.... More

It's a great course and worth to play it. It has three 9-hole parts. If you visit it for the first time try to book the Machico and Desertas part with great views. Sometimes the bunkers are flooded and not in very good conditions but the greens and the rest are outstanding. It's going down- and uphill a lot but... More

The course has great views but the staff is not nice. Fairways were dry but not enough to spoil your round. Good greens

A great golf experience - The staff in all areas are very friendly and helpful. We were staying at Porto Bay Serra hotel and we were picked up and taken back by courtesy bus or buggy each day - great service. The course occupies a wonderful position and you are able to stop after 9 and have a drink -... More

Very friendly staff, all very helpfull. Course dry this time of year but the greens were quick and held a ball. Not a long course for the most part, but some long carries of the whites over ravines. Some holes abit 'iffy' as uphill all the way so difficult to judge, and they will test your fitness, especially if you... More

Our female friend, whose main hobby is golf, played the course on Sunday 9th October as part of our stay at the Porto Bay Serra Golf Hotel. This had been one of the main reasons for coming up into the hills for a few days, and should have been the highlight of the stay for her, but, due to poor... More

The course is a 35 minute drive from the centre of Funchal and courtesy coaches can be booked which saves quite a lot of money. The course is quite high up so we found ourselves in cloud when we arrived. It cleared sufficiently for us to tee off around 13:30 but, after 14 holes and a couple of soakings, we... More
