Founded in 1756 by Royal Charter of King D. José I, Real Companhia Velha, also known as Royal Oporto Wine Company, has the most ancient Portuguese cellars in the countryThe centuries old cellars of Real Companhia Velha, are situated in Vila Nova de Gaia, right in front Oporto, in other words, on the left bank of Douro river.Over 100.000 m2 stores carefully a vast selection of Port Wines Tawny – aged in oak barrels -, as well as Vintage Port, maintaining the prestige e reputation this house enjoys over 250 years. At the cellars of Real Companhia Velha, in the silence of its vaults, the wine is kept in barrels of noble wood, the work made by coopers who have served the Company for many generations. There, asleep in a unique peacefulness, barrels and vats are lost in time... 10, 20... 30 years... What does it matter! The time it takes for each wine to reach its exact point of maturity. One of our Top Tours, starts with an exclusive video that shows the evolution of the Port since the Douro Region, all the way to the old cellars, followed to a visit to the main ageing cellar, centuries old, moving up to visit our old “Vintage” museum. Finishes with a tasting of two young Ports, white and red, plus a 20 year old tawny.

After crossing the high level of Pont Luiz I to the south side my wife and I found an ancient ceramic advert for the company on the side of a wall in the original name of the company "Real Vinocola" with directions - so off down the side roads we trotted wondering if we would ever find anything and whether... This visit was part of a booked tourist mini train tour and I was not expecting much though this proved wrong. This was a port tour in the style of French chateau and was great. A warm welcome to the house, an informative video and then the tour of the cellars. The tasting was perfect with a full range of... More

This was the best visit to a port house that we went on. Although tucked out of the way it was the most informative and our guide Katrina certainly knew her stuff! We watched a video first of all and then had a guided tour. I learned so much about the process and history of port and the various blends.... More

This Port wine producer is the only one owned by Portuguese. We paid 7.50 euros each for the Classic tour. Our guide was informative and friendly and answered all our questions. We were given four different Port wines to taste accompanied by a dish of nuts and biscuits, The visit ended with a tour of the wine cellars. Amazing! Compare... More

I visited Real Companhia Velha on a guided tour in English and Portuguese. At the beginning we were acquainted about the history of Port wine and Real Companhia Velha in particular by a very nice and competent guide. After that we maid a tour of wine production facility and at the end of course wine tasting. I enjoyed very much... More

We enjoyed the tour with our guide Ana. Since no one else showed up for the assigned tine, we had our private tour. It is a working cellar so there is activity going on, which in our opinion added to the interest. Cool old cellars full of character! We did the 15 E tasting which was very nice. We walked... More

Very interesting tour in relatively small groups - definitely worth a visit! Accommodates for French, Portuguese, German (if i remember correctly!) and English.

This Port Cave is up the hill and back from the riverfront, but it is worth the effort getting there. Excellent guide, an introductory video and a trip around the cellars before the port tasting all for €3 per person. You see the story of the development this important trade between Portugal and Great Britain.

I paid for a tour. I was not given a ticket. I was asked to wait in a reception area and told that I might have to wait 10-15 minutes. After about 20 minutes, I could hear that an introductory film had started in the adjoining cinema. Fearing that my tour would not begin until this group - a bus... More

We have toured most of the wine cellars over the years. This one we somehow had overlooked this year. And we think this is the best one of them all! The tour is very nice, with a nice film in the beginning that explains the history of Port wine production. And you learn that this company is the oldest one,... More
