A bit of history and a walk.

The castle is in a historic part of town. I went in and wondered around. It was cool to see the stone structure. Made me think of Game of Thrones. "winter is coming" lol.

This is the mail attraction and I spent a good couple of hours here. The information is well presented and you can read as much or as little as you wish depending on interest and time. At 6 euros it is probably fair, though I have paid less in Spain for an equally magnificent experience. If you are anywhere near... More

main tourist attraction of the town of ponferrada, the medieval castle dates from the 12th century and is on the route of the Camino de santiago. A must visit for anyone who passes through the region.

This castle was erected by the Knights Templar in the 12th century and later centuries (13th, 14th and 15th centuries as they needed more room). Hearing about this castle, I decided to change my plans to see this humongous castle: 8000 square meters! I didn’t regret my decision! Its entrance is delightful. I kept looking at all its details. Truly... More

While I only had the chance to go around the outer walls. The way this fortification is maintained is superb. At night is a sight not to be missed with wonderful lighting to make for a more dramatic presence.

I like castles, and this enormous space did not dissapoint! You could spend an hour or half a day visiting this extensive castle, with many interpretive displays, and an historic research library.

I had no idea about this town prior to walking into it along the camino. I have never seen a castle like the one here (very unique) and so I decided to explore it. I could have spent a couple hours there but unfortunately I arrived an hour before it closed so somewhat rushed around. It is definitely worth going... More

I had a great breakfast across from this castle while walking the Camino. I walked in from Molinaseca and it was a drizzly morning, so I went in following the sweet smells of hot chocolate. Sitting at my table I started wondering if a visit to this caste was worth getting to my next Camino stop later than planned. By... More

If you have a spare hour to spend in Ponferrada then the castle is well worth a visit. There are lots of information boards in Spanish and English and the views of the town from the castle are great. We were there on a Wednesday when all the attractions are free.

Sympathetically renovated using natural products & free Wednesdays except you then get groups of Spanish OAPs everywhere gabbling ten to the dozen.& obstructing everything. Some of the rudest self serving people imaginable. Not enough English signage although more than most places. No access to Templar Library. So more positives than negatives and free. Good photographs & staff appear reasonably friendly.
