This is a tiny island which was turned into a botanical garden over a period of hundred years. It used to belong to a baroness St. Lèger who then sold it when her fortunes fell. Take the boat ( round trip is ~20 CHF) for 15 minutes from Ascona. The iland itslef charges 8CHF for entry and there is a... More

This little island botanical garden is situated in Lake Maggiore and provided us a wonderful morning's relaxation; had a picnic on the grounds. The gardens are well-tended and labelled, and quite interesting and diverse (the fern garden was a cool surprise). The boat trip is short, but worth the trip in and of itself. The views of the lakes and... More

Having our holiday apartment right next to the marina was a big plus to choose going to the brissago island. This small little island near the harbour of Porto Ronco has an unique flower and plants with a long famous history. The trip starts with enter the boat which cost around 20$ (Family ticket) and another 20$ to enter the... More

You get there only per boat from Ascona or Ronco (most likely also from Locarno) - the costs for the trip incl. entrance fee amount to about 20 CHF. The island is a nice place, crowded on weekends. It can be visited within one hour. If you are a freak, however, plan for a longer stay. There are plants from... More

The Isloe di Brissago is a great boat ride from the main land. We took the boat from Locarno on a lovely day which is well worth the hour and 15 mins journey. The botanical gardens have a lot to offer and it's a lovely walk around. Going earlier in the year (May/ June / July) is probably a better... More

These are an amazing set of gardens on an island at the northern end of Lake Maggiore, just in Switzerland, and can be reached by ferry from a number of resorts nearby, e.g. Brissago, Ascona & Locarno, although the ferry can be expensive if you choose one of the longer trips. The gardens are arranged in regions of the world,... More

Flowers and plants from 5 continents, relaxing atmosphere, imagine it used to be a private island belonging to the Baroness of Saint-Léger for about 40 years and on the 9th of November 1927 she sold it to Max Emden, doctor in chemistry and mineralogy. The actual house was built in 1928, as you walk through the house you can still... More

We visited this lovely botanical garden as part of our Lago Maggiore Express excursion. It was an excellent way to break up the three hour trip back to Stresa.(one hour from Locarno on the ferry, one hour on the island and then two hours back to Stresa). There wasn't a lot of colour when we visited (compared with Isola Madre... More

Being a keen gardiner with an interest in landscaping - I just loved this little island. Several ways to get there. Get to Ascona and take a ferry across (20 mins) or take the Locarno/Ascona/Isola ferry (1 hour) - make sure you spend time in Ascona, so pretty and such unique little shops. At the Locarno ferry terminal, look at... More
