I had been looking for this little gem for some time but could never find the entrance. Reviews were also a bit confusing. So here it is.
Drive and park at Surfer’s Beach, from there you start the trail to survival beach. The beach is not your average beach. There are boulders all along the trail that you must climb on an off. You’re hiking along the ocean, sometimes on water, sometimes on the boulders and sometimes on land. When you’re walking on water, along the coast, there’s an end to the trail so there’s no way to get lost. There are no signs telling you that you have arrived but you will know once you start seeing the beautiful landscape. Make sure you’re wearing good shoes, especially if walking in the water because there are places covered with sea urchins. Bring water, sun block lotion, a snack...and make sure you carry your trash out.

Drive to Surfers beach parking lot then follow trail. I wore flip-flops and was fine but you have to be careful. I would advise running shoes as rocks are sharp on some parts of the trail which half hour hike. There is shaded areas from the steep hillside. I didn’t bring my chair as you need both hands to maneuver in some spots so backpack is recommended. The beach is nice but the waves were strong and high water so couldn’t go into cave so I’ll probably come back in summer. Some people were swimming however there are always people drowning from undertows or rip currents so I don’t take that chance. You can watch the surfers at surfers beach too.

I’m just going to say what nobody else seems to be saying. The hike is brutal. And I’m an avid fitness, outdoorsy type. I’m not easily deterred from a challenge. But this hike was death defying. There’s no “real” defined path, so you just kind of follow your heart and hope for the best. The entire terrain is basically a tree root system that you’re climbing over or crawling under. Or jagged rock climbing that will land you in the emergency room with one misstep. All 4 of my family members were bleeding from somewhere by the end of the day.
After 40 minutes or so of this, you finally make it! The anticipation of sprawling white sandy beaches and sparkling blue water is finally here! And it’s…..fine. Pretty? Sure. The ocean bottom is also rocky and the waves will pummel you into jagged rocks if you’re not careful (just ask my 11 year old). It was no prettier than any other white sandy beach - I think the appeal is the treacherous hike means less people, so it is a quieter beach. But you can’t *really* enjoy it because you know that hell hike is waiting for you on the flippity flop.
Anyway, that’s all I have to say about that. Now please excuse me, I have to go ice my very angry knees.

We took the trail up to Cueva Survival Beach from the end of Surfer’s Beach. Moderate hiking level. We were hiking for half an hour and still didn’t make it to the end. It was getting late and we were getting tired... so we headed back to Surfer’s Beach. Needless to say we didn’t survive the Cueva Survival Beach hike lol. If you’re thinking of checking it out, here are some tips; start early before it gets too hot, wear good shoes, have enough water and snacks. All in all we had a great time and would do it again. It’s a pretty good hike if you’re looking for some exercise and rugged scenery

This was such a beautiful beach to go and visit. If you and you are friends are up for an adventure, then this is for you! To get to survival beach you have to do a little bit of a hike. I would say it took my friends and I about 30-40 mins. There is a sign at Surfer’s beach that points to the beginning of the Survival beach trail. A lot of reviews said to have good footwear. We had water shoes and sandals on and felt pretty safe. If you are about average at hiking, then this will be a breeze for you. Survival beach was so beautiful once we got to it! We sat along the shoreline and enjoyed birdwatching! There was about 5 other people on the beach while we were there. If you want to kickback and hang out with friends, then this is the perfect spot! Make sure to do you research on the trail before you go!

Difficult trail but definitely worth it. Wear sneakers for the hike. Starts tough, make it to the rocks and hang out. Recharge and finish the last leg to the beach, which rivals Flamenco. Explore the caves and boat wreck. Plan your trip for low tide and enjoy the geology and swimming holes. It reminded me of Playa de los Muertos in Cabo de Gata, Spain.

Survival Beach it’s a tricky beach to get to. It’s extremely hard to get there by car, most people get there by walking, but it’s extremely worth it! I recommend not going alone and being prepared to walk and snacks. Visit wisely and do not leave rubbish!

Well worth the 15 minute hike! Wear sneakers or hiking sandals, as there are many rocks and tree roots, as well as inclines on the way. The beach itself has many stunning rock formations and big waves. Beautiful color of the water, shady spots as well as sun. The water is pretty rough for swimming, but there are some nice areas to sit in calmer water. Glad we took the hike and made it to this amazing beach!

Hike was one of the best I’ve been on. Combination of sharp rocks and hillside jungle. Lots of amazing views from several parts of the hike. Epic view of secluded beach towards the end of the hike. Well worth the effort.

Put your hiking shoes on ! This place is hard to find only locals know where it’s located put it in the gps as “surf zone” the store it’s down the street from here then you will see a gate picture is provided enter the gate and follow the road once you do that follow all the way down on the sandy parking lot and park there, there is a trail on the far right after you park and then it takes 10-15 min to get to it ! So worth it and beautiful ! We did many u turns trying to figure out where the heck this place was and I did everyone a favor and provided pictures , Your welcome !!

What time does the beach close? Is it safe in the evening?
Written March 13, 2018
Hello Roxanne,
It's a public beach so technically it's open 24/7. But to get to the beach you have to hike a little bit so I wouldn't do it after sunset. It's is pretty safe as we don't get reports about bad things happening there but you should always take care just in case. Survivor is isolated enough that I wouldn't go there alone even during daylight.

Is it called Survivor Beach or Survival Beach?
Written April 9, 2017
Survival.......probably the site of survival training during the Ramey Air Force Base era. See also 1963 release of Lord of the Flies....some scenes were filmed at Survival Beach in 1961, and also at Vieques, and El Yunque.

Can anyone tell me how to get here from Old San Juan without a car?
Written September 28, 2016
As there are not many ways to travel by bus on the island from one town to another when it comes to specific locations such as beach sides, your best option is car rental. In the end, it's more affordable and reliable than taxi transportation.
