Melones is not the prettiest beach by Culebra (or Caribbean) standards, but it does have some of the best snorkeling in the area. Live coral, turtles, and beautiful tropical fish are just a quick drive(or brisk hike) from the Ferry terminal. When you arrive at the beach, snorkeling gear is available for rent (in case you didn’t bring yours). As any local will tell you, once in front of the ocean, GO RIGHT! This was altogether pretty good snorkeling, but on a sunny afternoon, the reef to the right has some bigger rock formations with a ton of colorful coral and fish. It was magical! Also really easy to get in at this beach.

If you go straight out from the parking lot the reef will be to the rt almost along the shore. It gets better if you go out a bit & keep going. We saw a giant tuna here this time. Lots of pretty fish & beautiful reef out a ways. This was probably the healthiest looking reef we saw while staying in culebra. It’s not huge though. …

Melones is a beautiful beach equipped with swings, picnic tables, chickens,shady spots by the sea and some great folk art. But the real beauty is only a couple of steps into the water. The coral here is spectacular, vivid purple sea fan, and an active reef makes this my favorite. This is a great spot for sunsets too.…
