We happened to visit on a special day, Mill Day. This is a beautiful farm to visit, and the festival is low-key enjoyable fun. Bring your camera because this is a nice opportunity to get nature shots in a beautiful setting. The mill was not...More

I live about a mile from this farm that is owned by Virginia Tech. They do important research on how to "finish" cattle on grass instead of grain. The story of the invention of the reaper is underappreciated but the farm staff does a great...More

Great place to see where the modern-day combine got its start. It's owned by Virginia Tech so it's very well kept up. The working Grist Mill is also very neat to see. Hoping to make it back the first Saturday in October every year they...More

Cute little buildings and self-guided tour of grounds. Too bad it was raining or we would've walked around longer

My husband and I stopped here on our way home from Pennsylvania. It's right off I-81, so you don't have to drive far to get here. There was one other couple at the farm the day we went. It was peaceful. The old cabins were...More

Only a couple minutes away from the highway there is a lovely oasis, ideal for stretching your legs, having a picnic, and learning a little bit! This free museum is operated by VA Tech and is surrounded by an agricultural test station, but the actual...More

The Cyrus McCormick Farm at Walnut Grove is known as the birthplace of mechanical reaper, the predecessor to the combine harvester which eventually led to the forming of the giant International Harvester Corporation. This is where modern farming began. The farm, located halfway between Lexington...More

We stopped here on our way back from Wade's Mill and really enjoyed the buildings being open and learning more about Cyrus McCormick and family. Just an enjoyable little wayside exhibit area.

Come see Cyrus McCormick's reaper, along with the grist mill and blacksmith shop. There is a walking trail along the creek to the pond, we skipped because it was raining.
