The story of the very brutal, bloody, ferocious fighting at Saylor's Creek is one of the least known horrors of our Civil War. The park ranger who spent more than two hours with us had SO much information, and was a true historian, not just...More

I stopped at the Sailor's Creek Battlefield last April on my way to Appomattox. As a coincidence my timing had me there for the 150th Anniversary of the battle which provided me the opportunity to witness events as they occurred during Lee's retreat from Richmond...More

Few people this side of Appomattox knew about the existence of Sailor's (or Saylor's) Creek Battlefield Historical State Park until Chris Calkins, a park ranger who used to operate the visitors center at Five Forks on the Petersburg battlefield, came on board to renovate the...More

I knew about Sailor's (Sayler's) Creek, but hadn't been near enough to ever stop by before. This was a well documented battlefield, fairly well preserved and well taken care of... as a part of the "Lee's Retreat" series near Appomattox Court House. The museum is...More

We stopped here as part of our Civil War Trust tour and were treated to a battlefield that is almost as pristine as it was back when the battle was fought. The welcome center has a great exhibit on the various articles and personal stories...More

We visited for the 150th Re-enactment and had a great time. My 8 year old son was quite impressed... this is the first re-enactment that we've been to and it didn't disappoint!

This was a high point on our drive of following Lee's retreat from Richland to Appomattox Court House. The state has constructed a very pleasant visitor’s center that provides an overview of the history of the area and of the battle that took place here...More

Very enjoyable time. The park is not large and is totally not commercialized like some other Historic sites. The Park Rangers were very friendly and well informed. The visitors center is well appointed and contains many artifacts and materials related to the Confederate Army's retreat...More

I agree with other reviewers that Sailor's Creek Battlefield is an important and educational stop on the Lee's Retreat tour. I did not realize the significance of this battle. The loss of 7700 Confederate troops was a major factor leading to the surrender at Appomattox...More
