We stopped here while out driving and started with the levee walk. There are nice placards and exhibits telling the history of this area and how it was changed by the James River, the Kanawa canal, flooding, and transportation. The exhibits have some really interesting...More

This area can be viewed after a nice dinner at the James River Tavern or a day on the river kayaking or tubing. Just a short walk from either. It is nicer in spring or fall, but enjoyable year round and very informative if you...More

Self tour, easy to follow. Extremely informative!! This poor town has literally been underwater because of flooding many times. Pictures, a Batteau boat and a monument showing water depth. This town, Scottsville, Virginia is so sweet. It will not disappoint.

A lot of work has gone into researching and displaying the history of river traffic on the James. This is a special place!

Very well done local and really early national history. I knew there were canals going up the James River but did not know how extensive it was.

As a river town, Scottsville's history is closely intertwined with that of the James River. In the 1800s, the Kanawa Canal played a vital role in moving tobacco and produce up and down the James River from Lynchburg to Richmond. Scottsville was a very important...More

We enjoyed walking through the exhibits, reading all about the varied history of Scottsville, and seeing the example of the flat bottom cargo barges used on the river in the past. It was fairly cold & windy, so we briefly climbed the levee to see...More

Something you just don't think about much...how all the stuff got to where the settlers needed it to be. Enter the canals and batteau boats...this is a beautifully built and illustrated exhibit - made even better if you visit on the right Wednesday in June...More
