The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

My wife and I were visiting Staunton and just happened to walk up the street where the theater is located on a Thursday night. It was "Pay what you want" to see the play "The Fall of Henry VI." The interior is beautiful. We were...More

I have seen this great center perform "A Christmas Carol" with students several years ago and decided to take friends last holiday season. The facility is absolutely a wooden work of art. I highly recommend that the ASC be your number one on the Staunton...More

We had the chance to be allowed in on a dress rehearsal night, it was Henry the 6th part 3, fantastic actors, great intimate theatre, unique, a jewel! And it was free.

We made this visit a priority even before we arrived. The story behind the theater I found thrilling and was anxious to enjoy the experience. We bought tickets for Macbeth. The actors were truly talented. They took on the challenge of multiple roles, and before...More

The ASC really puts on an incredible performance. From playing contemporary music acoustically during the beginning and middle of the show, to the audience interaction, it is quite an experience. The scenery and costumes are so well done and authentic, and the actors truly are...More

An amazingly enthusiastic and energetic performance of Love's Labours Lost. I was surprised by the energy of the cast who performed musical hits before the performance and during the supposed interval. What stamina and dedication! The fun-loving nature of the cast shone through the performance....More

I've been there several times and always had an enjoyable experience. The theater is small and intimate which gives the audience a chance to be close to the actors — some even get to sit on the stage! Props are minimal which is good for...More

Gorgeous theater with really great actors. We went to see Much Ado About Nothing, what hilarious fun! We really look forward to going back when we are in Staunton again.

Saw Peter and the Starcatcher and I laughed so hard I had tears. I was invited by a friend. I'm now buying tickets to bring two guests of my own and share the great performance. Absolutely a perfect performance.

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are

To be honest Tom it would depend on the play. I think it may be hard for the 5 year old to sit through a play. 10 and 12, I think would get a kick out of it. I would call the theatre and ask them what they suggest, they are... More
