The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

We visited the American Shakespeare Center last Thursday evening. This was our 10th visit to the theatre and have never been disappointed. We are always amazed by the actors and the fact that they are doing three different shows. This show had the road ensemble...More

We saw a matinee production of Marlowe's "Dr Faustus". Everything about the afternoon was wonderful. Everyone on staff was most friendly and courteous. The theater itself was a treat. And though I really need to get a hearing aid I was very impressed that I...More

My husband and I have perhaps just enough "sophistication" (LOL!) to dip our toes into the Shakespearean pool and this was the perfect venue in which to do it! Because we knew that the actors would stick to the authentic script, we read a synopsis...More

We were not sure what to expect with the offering of Wittenberg at the Blackbriar Playhouse, but we have been to a show in the past and enjoyed it immensely. We got first row tickets on the floor in front of the stage which we...More

We've been to the authentic Shakespearean theatre twice now, and both times were fabulously enjoyable experiences. I can't think of a better place to spend a night while traveling. The actors are fantastically talented, the setting charming beyond words, and the location is just wonderful....More

As a first time visitor to Staunton we so enjoyed the intimate performance of "Wittenburg" at Blackfriars Playhouse, home to the ASC. Performing a very ambitious schedule of Shakespeare and other plays, this young, energetic company offers a wonderful evening's entertainment at very reasonable prices.

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are

To be honest Tom it would depend on the play. I think it may be hard for the 5 year old to sit through a play. 10 and 12, I think would get a kick out of it. I would call the theatre and ask them what they suggest, they are... More
