Preservation Virginia acquired the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1930 when Congress deeded the house and 1.77 Acres of land to the organization in order to preserve it and make it accessible to the public. Over the years lighthouse and its surroundings have been restored including repairing the lantern after damage from Hurricane Barbara in 1953, repairing the damaged original Aquia sandstone and restoring the surrounding dunes.

Today, visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

I absolutely love taking people to this lighthouse. Most people don't know that it is located in Virginia Beach, the tourists expect to have to go to the North Carolina Outer Banks to see lighthouses so this is a fun surprise. It does get very hot on hot days, there is little ventilation at the top (so prepare to sweat).... More

The Cape Henry lighthouse is a great stop in VB. An impressive old masonry structure, authorized by Geo. Washington himself. Because it is on a military base, make sure you bring photo ID and the car registration & insurance cards. (We had to get our insurance proof on our phone screen; thank you USAA!)

This light house is a great piece of history and you can tour it and climb to the top. The view from the top is beautiful. There is quite a bit of history to be learned here. If you like history I definitely recommend visiting this lighthouse.

The Lighthouse is located on an active military base so be prepared to exit your car for a search before entering. The soldiers were very nice and quick. The older lighthouse can be toured and has wonderful views of the area. Lots of information signs telling you the history of the area! The newer lighthouse is beautiful but as it... More

Make sure you visit the website and look at the dates that the lighthouse is closed. Historically fantastic and many storytelling items within a brief 30 minute walk. Located in the historic Fort Landing, make sure you have your vehicle insurance and ID ready along with a vehicle search. A friendly reminder that this is located inside an active base.

This is on the Fort Story base, so you must have i.d. Once through the gate, proceed straight to the lighthouse. Park and treat yourself to beautiful views from the overlook. Follow the trails through the dunes to the beach with views of the Chesapeake and the Atlantic. There are actually 2 lighthouses here, both very picturesque.

If you are in Virginia Beach please take time to visit the Cape Henry Lighthouse on the grounds of Fort Story. This is the oldest lighthouse in the US and is worth a visit. Made from beautiful fieldstone you can climb to the top (I did not) and look out over the ocean. There is a very nice gift shop... More

we toured this lighthouse and area in September 2016. good afternoon spot if you're in VA Beach. however--- you need ID to get onto the base, where this lighthouse is located, and they are serious about security.

My daughter, myself, and my two teenage grandsons went to Cape Henry today. The initial entry was a bit intimidating but understandable since you are entering a base. The woman in the gift shop was friendly and informative. Had no idea really what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed our visit!! Was windy and cool so would suggest an extra jacket.... More
