Celebrating 81 years, Tacoma Art Museum is an anchor in the city’s downtown and a gathering place for connecting people through art via thoughtful exhibitions, exciting events, and enriching programs.

The museum’s collection of more than 4,500 works emphasizes the art and artists of the Northwest and broader western region. Highlights of the collection include:

-the largest retrospective museum collection of glass art by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly on continued view;

-the largest collection of studio art jewelry by Northwest artists;

-key holdings in 19th century European and 20th-century American art;

-one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints on the West Coast; and

-the Haub Family Collection, one of the nation’s premier western American art collections, with approximately 300 works spanning 200 years. The Haub Family Collection is the first major museum collection of western American art in the Pacific Northwestern region.

Named by USA Today as one of the “Top 10 Great Places to See Art in Smaller Cities,” the museum has developed a national reputation for presenting art in a thought-provoking yet accessible manner, with a strong commitment to Northwest art through its acquisition and exhibition programs. In addition to dynamic exhibitions, nationally touring shows, and historical retrospectives, TAM serves the diverse communities of the region through innovative programming and learning opportunities for all ages, including free community events.

TAM is located in Tacoma’s Museum District, near the Museum of Glass, the Washington State History Museum, Children’s Museum of Tacoma, and historic Union Station.

We travel from Seattle to visit this museum. It is excellent. Exhibits are expertly presented, and we truly enjoy the lectures. We've been here several times, and still marvel at the "courtyard".

The TAM was magnificent with the obligatory Dale Chihuly exhibits and (what we came for) the Outwin Portraiture exhibit. If you're not into portraiture, you might not care, but it was very well done. We were about ready to leave when they set up chairs for a jazz group in the lobby. A 3-piece band and a singer that knocked... More

It was a really awesome place. Loved the Chihuly Art work. If you enjoy Art, then this is the place to visit. It is not very big so it does not require a lot of walking. But their is plenty to see. I recommend TAM.

I really liked visiting the Tacoma art museum because we only had an hour but it was enough time to see everything since it is a smaller museum. I loved the variety of art! There was a collection of portraits each with a unique artistic style, some glass sculptures by Chihuly, and landscape paintings depicting Washington's natural beauty. I would... More

TAM brings in some remarkable and thought provoking exhibitions. Recent exhibitions have included the 2016 Outwin and 30 Americans. Powerful stuff!

The core collections are impressive for a city this size; the local glass artist collection is great. The newest addition (a whole wing) consists of primarily Western US art - not generally my personal thing but there are very good pieces in that collection. The museum is within a few hundred yards of the Washington Historical Museum and the International... More

The Tacoma Art Museum excels in its classical collections, and since a year or so, its Haub Collection of Western Art, which is fabulous. The Museum is in central Tacoma, very close to the Chihuly Museum, the Washington State Historical Museum, many restaurants, the waterfront, the Amtrak station and historic downtown Tacoma. Seattle has neglected Tacoma's values for many years;... More

Well thought out and selected high quality displays of permanent and traveling exhibits. Very good cafe. Short walk from Museum of Glass and Glass Bridge as well as the great hall of Union Station. Well worth a visit.

This is another find in Tacoma. I loved the art collection and the Chihuly glass exhibit. A number of tasteful benefactors have generously given to TAM and the quality of TAM's collections has clearly grown.

Terriffic exhibit of Portraiture art sponsored by the Smithsonian. Held over, don't miss it! Haug collection of western art is georgeous. Around 50 pieces of a 200-piece collection on display, we're told. Framing of the Haug collection is a priceless display all in itself. And, of course, the glass collection is over the top. The family whose 200 or so... More
