Nice route to take a quiet walk or bike ride. Easily accessible but feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. Lots of scenery: forests, rivers, open pastures with mountain views.

Love this trail and they are just now completing a new leg of it, a bridge and access from the trail into Elkins proper. From the trailhead, one can walk or bike from Elkins, through Gilman, through Kerens, through Montrose and into Parsons. From Parsons you can go through Hambleton and uphill through the Blackwater Canyon and into Thomas coming out on the Douglas Road. Most of the trail is in a woods type setting and in mid to late October the trees all turn to their familiar fall colors. Wildlife can be viewed along the trail as well. The leg from Elkins to Gilman is paved. From Gilman on its graveled and grassy. As of this month October/2018 the trail (I have been told) has an almost non existent section headed into Parsons from the Montrose side at a place called “Moore”. New highway construction is finding this trail at this point being crossed and used by logging trucks and heavy equipment and it may be hard getting through here now. Soon I am sure it will all be back to normal as construction completes. All in all this is a beautiful trail and one worth your time. You’ll love the natural beauty and the picturesque opportunities you’ll have for your camera!!

The Allegheny Highlands Trail goes from the Elkins Depot Welcome Center in Elkins to Thomas. It is a well maintained trail and you can bike the trail all the way through or stop at the different rest areas along the way. If you are coming to Elkins be sure to bring your bike and you will experience the beautiful scenery we have to offer!

We walked about three miles on the trail and it was paved in the area we walked. We parked in the trail parking lot, so we had a sunny quarter to half mile walk before we found some shade. We did note that there was parking and access from the Visitor's Center so we will park there in the future. The trail was well maintained and level. Easy walking for us.

Absolutely love running on this trail. Clean and the 3 miles of paved stretch is great, flat, and shaded.
