Your journey begins at Wappocomo Station, situated next to a charming homestead and a sprawling view of the mountains. Enjoy the sounds of vintage diesels as they lead you through beautiful pastures and farms dating back to the 1700s. As you wind along the South Branch of the Potomac River, you’ll enter a visually-striking gorge known as the Trough. One of the most scenic spots along the South Branch, the Trough is home to American bald eagles. All excursions are round-trip and include narration. A concession car is available to purchase snacks and drinks. Sorry, no smoking, pets, or alcoholic beverages permitted.

25 years ago I visited Potomac Eagle, it was an amazing experience. Today I relived that experience with my wife and children and again it was an amazing experience. Wonderful staff, wonderful scenery. We saw numerous bald eagles and had an incredible day!

The train is pulled with a diesel engine, old but not the exciting steam engine. The ride is very soothing, long and restful, along the river bed with nice views of the river and the nearby mountains. The guide gives a talk about the history...More

Had a wonderful time doing their 3-hour trip through the Trough on May 28th. That trip length seemed about perfect (at least in the coach cars, the club cars may be different). The staff were friendly and super helpful. We saw many eagles and thought...More

We saw eagles, had a good lunch in the club car and loved the train ride itself. I would suggest grade school children and up (mine are 8 and 10) for best time. Lots of areas to sit and open windows for viewing. If you...More

We took a Saturday afternoon in late September to do this excursion. The weather was just right. The fall foliage was beautiful. The three hour round trip train ride was just long enough to enjoy the countryside looking for eagles. While traveling along the South...More

Trying to decide between the 1/2 day trip and the all day trip to Petersburg. What part of the line has the best scenery, and how much of it would I miss out on if I opted for the shorter trip?

While I cannot comment on the Petersburg trip I will advise the shorter afternoon trip has been recommended as the better time to view eagles. I took the morning trip and only observed one eagle. The train's crew... More

Hi! I am taking the 8 hour trip to Petersberg. I would like to know what there is to do there. Is everything close to the railroad station?

The layover in Petersburg is 1 1/2-2 hours. The train will arrive at the South Side Depot, which has all WV made items in the 2-story depot. There are a few other shops and a restaurant, all within walking distance.
