Overview
More
The most beautiful cave in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest, Cave of the Mounds lies just off U.S. Highways 18/151 in Blue Mounds, WI. The United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service designated Cave of the Mounds a National Natural Landmark because the site possesses "exceptional value as an illustration of the nation's natural heritage and contributes to a better understanding of man's environment". Curious tourists and budding cave enthusiasts have been enjoying an introduction to caving in the midwest for years while visiting Cave of the Mounds. Commonly referred to as the "jewel box" of America's major caves for the variety and delicacy of its formations, Cave of the Mounds is recognized by the Chicago Academy of Sciences as "the significant cave of the upper Midwest".

Our tour guide wasn't super excited to be there and it showed. I wouldn't recommend bringing a kid under 5. I brought my baby in a carrier and struggled in one or two areas trying to get through. Kinda cool for adults though. Please do...More

Our tour guide, Bob, is very vested in his job, and the cave, and it really shows. He worked hard to make the visit special, especially for the kids. His attention to detail is amazing, and his appreciation of the cave is infectious. A great...More

I've seen or driven by this for years and finally stopped on a road trip. It was very interesting how this cave came about. You see a short video first, then head down into it. It was pretty easy to navigate, not slippery or anything,...More

We took our 7 year old grandkids with us to the Cave. It was wonderful and led very well by a trained and knowledge-able teen. The grounds which we didn't explore are suitable for a hike or picnic. We intend to return just to explore...More

Great place to visit. The caves are beautiful. The front counter staff and your guides were all very knowledgeable and friendly. Wasn't very expensive either. We spent under a hundred dollars for a family of four with the kids doing the gem mining. Only complaint...More

You need to be able to walk ~ an hour, including up & down some steps and potentially across slightly damp pavement, & there is nowhere to easily sit for a break. Hope that helps!

It is definitely hands to yourself. Oils from your hands can compromise the interior of the cave and ruin the growth of the stalactites and stalagmites.
