Quiet refuge away from the daily grind
Oct. 2020
We spent an hour or so on a beautiful fall (October) day mostly driving thru the Horicon Marsh, entering from Hwy 49.

Not a lot of birds here this time of year but the marsh is a special place, and has been a significant part of my wife's experiences growing up in Waupun.

The area off of Hwy 49 has a 3 mile driving loop, a number of walking trails and a boardwalk system built over the marsh.

Access is free.

Nice walk
Apr. 2020 • Family
Went here with the family. It's a nice place to walk with pretty views. There is a nature center, restrooms, and trails and boardwalk to view the many birds that travel through. Check out the nearby Ledge County Park for some small canyons about five minutes away. Pretty area and worth a visit, but probably best once things start to grow in the summer.

Water and Birds
Oct. 2019
The highlight of this super-marsh - one of the biggest fresh-water marshes in the United States - are the birds that use this as a nesting grounds, or a stopover on their migration routes. While I am not a avid bird watcher, I like coming here and catching some cool bird on camera that I didn't have before. Horicon sports numerous trails, auto-tour, three visitor centers/museums and more. Its upper part is a National Wildlife Refuge, while the lower part is a State Wildlife Area.

Vast Freshwater Marshland
Mar. 2020
The Horicon Marsh area, an extension of the Kettle Moraine plain is a true gem of a freshwater destination worthy of hiking and sightseeing anytime of the year.

Horicon Marsh Explorium
Feb. 2020 • Family
We visited with our kids and grandkids. Took a short hike. Went to the gift shop and to the Explorium. Grandkids were a little to young at 3 and 5 to get much out of the Explorium but they had fun climbing on everything. They mostly liked being outdoors and going on the boardwalk.

Entertaining and Educational....
Jun. 2019
We went on a WI DNR field trip. Very informative and interesting. A couple hour walk in the morning and a 2 hour boat ride into the Marsh after the walk.

There are two visitor centers at Horicon Marsh, both are good
May 2019 • Friends
Horicon Marsh is a haven for bird lovers. On a recent birdwatching weekend in May, viewers spotted 157 species of birds including year-round and migrating species. There is no admission; the roads and trails are free. There are many great spots to view the marsh and birds but be sure to stop at one of the visitor centers.

There are two formal visitor centers at Horicon Marsh. The largest, Horicon Education and Visitor Center (managed by the Wisconsin Dept of Natural Resources) is on the south side of the marsh along Hwy 28. This site has interpretive displays, spotting scopes on the outside deck, and a room with hands-on educational material for children; the lower level includes meeting rooms. Outside there are loop trails that lead down into the marsh. I picked up several maps and other information here, making this a great first stop on my visit to Horicon Marsh. Note that there are picnic tables away from the building up closer to the highway.

The second visitor center is at the Horicon Marsh Headquarters (managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service) off Hwy Z on the east edge of the marsh. This visitor center is smaller but includes a store, interpretive displays, and a deck with spotting scopes. Be sure to find the wonderful display of raptors in a glass case down the short hallway. This center also has trails leading out into the marsh.

A third, private facility, Marsh Haven Nature Center, is located along Hwy 49 at the north edge of the marsh. This center has a large room with displays showing the cultural history and wildlife of the marsh (admission $3). There are three short trails on the property that loop around open and wooded areas. Yellow-headed blackbirds are known to hang out here. This center is not as new or glitzy as the others but deserves a stop.

The Marsh visitor center is wonderful way to learn about the Marshs eco system. Walkways are well done through the Flowage. Birds, geese, frogs, cranes, pelicans. Back to nature day!

This is a wonderful place to come and view the local wildlife. There are many trails and a couple of telescopes out for use. It never disappoints.
