What’s not to like about Al Johnson’s. It is a Door County Landmark for a reason. Great food and Great service. Many of the servers from another country. They are great to talk with and love to talk about where they are from if you take the time to ask them. Everyone should do that. They are all very smart and you may learn a thing or two about another country you may have never known.
The best Swedish Pancakes around. Not to mention all the other great items on the menu. Not just breakfast items. Great Lake Perch and burgers as well. I don’t think you can get a bad meal there. We have had many great items from their menu.
Lars Johnson is a very nice man and is fun to talk with as well about all the Al Johnson’s history. What a Door County Gem. Had breakfast there 3 times last week. I get up every morning and wish I was sitting there having my Swedish Pancakes and Swedish meatballs.

I am not going to go over the food - lots have been written and reviewed aplenty. I like this restaurant for the combination of 3 things. Food is good, plus the specialty store allows you to buy all things Scandinavian. But the goats on the roof are something to travel far for! This is the only location I am aware of, that have goats grazing on the roofs of buildings - Scandinavian style. Another location, that doesn't exist anymore, was Little Norway near Madison - but that was run into the ground as a business few years ago, and ceased to exist.

I am sad at the removal real Swedish options. Cold plates and herring plate gone. I have been here 2-5 times a year for decades but no reason anymore. Will pick up getting beets and limps and lingonberries, cheese for my own smorgasbord I guess. Sigh! I miss the old menu!!!

Cute place with the female employees all dressed in traditional Scandinavian outfits... but not the men. Would have enjoyed seeing the men all dressed in traditional costumes as well. No fair just making the ladies suffer. ;-) The goats weren’t there when we visited, would have been fun to see them. The boutique is pretty great with a LARGE selection of Scandinavian goods. The food was just ok - I had meatballs and the Swedish hubby had pytti-panna. Tasted ok.

Cheese curds & Swedish meatballs are worth the wait! If you don't want to eat in the restaurant, head next door to the outdoor seating area and place your order via the walk up counter. Delish!

The gift shop was bright, clean, and full of things that caught my eye. There's something for everyone - men, women, children, and pets. What a variety.

A sight to see for sure at least for us! Very entertaining. People were everywhere and that was annoying but the goats were fun.

👍 Went for a drive and ended up at this delightful Door County treasure that has been here almost 70 years. Family and friend visiting from out of town from Buffalo NY. We had swedish pancakes with ligonberries and was quite delicious.

Super bummed that there were no goats on the roof when we came by around 4-5:00pm. She said they were off early today. I asked why they weren’t there, and the gal said the hours differ each day depending on weather, etc... she also said they are up a bit in the morning, and again late afternoon. Well, that was a bummer for us. The gift shop has lots of items they sell in the restaurant.

Among other things, this time we got the famous Swedish Pancake mix, Lingonberry Jam and the same coffee served in the restaurant.

What time of the day are the goats usually on the roof?
Written August 18, 2019
Excellent question! The best answer would be--it depends on the weather. I found out that although the official "Goat Parade" takes place annually in June, you can expect to see the goats on the roof by Memorial Day weekend up to sometime in October...depending on the weather. Barring rain or excessive heat, the goats are usually put out to graze on the roof at approximately 9am. I believe they generally go back to their barn in the late afternoon. Tip: there is a goat cam on line, so before you head in that direction, you can google it to be sure.
