This historic 1925 movie theater in downtown Hilo reopened in 1999 after being closed for 17 years. Our Mission is to revitalize, restore, and sustain the Historic Palace Theater as a venue that will educate, entertain, and inspire our diverse community. The Palace opened in October 1925 with the Silent Film “The Son of Zorro” Starring Douglas Fairbanks. Since then the Palace Theater has shown many types of films including Festivals, Documentaries, Independent, Sleepers, Art House, Academy Award Winners, Silver Screen Classics & still even shows Silent Films accompanied by the Palace Organ. But the Palace is a lot more then just a movie theater. Many Famous Musicians & Music Festivals, for example, have preformed here, covering a large array of music. Classical, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Electronic, Hawaiian & many other Traditional World Music acts. Live Theater, Musicals, Ballets & Halaus have also graced the Palace stage. Not to mention private parties and Hilo’s Special Events May Day Lei Day, Black & White Night & Chinese New Year. This Historical Theater has been in the hearts of many for almost a century, and we hope it will become a treasured memory for you as well. It’s through volunteered time & charitable donations that restorations & operations are possible, so that the Palace can continue entertaining the people & visitors of the Big Island for many more years.

If there's a movie here, do it. It's a wonderful piece of history and the theater is small but good. There's a lot of history here, I highly recommend exploring the downstairs area and it's old styled

We are often in Hilo but it seems never when anything is going on at the Palace. This time we found an actual movie to go see! The Hero staring Sam Elliott. (Aside, terrific movie!) I was like stepping back into the past. I watched...More

Hilo community members have made a concerted effort to restore this 1920's movie palace in order to offer both movies and live performances at this landmark building. The building offers architectural features which were well ahead of their time such as "stadium seating" and excellent...More

Very nice to see such a beautiful old theatre, really beats the modern no character place. Still need lots of work but the committee will get there in time. It will be something special when it gets finished

The old theater is still grand with a patina that has to be earned. We were there for the Nutcracker and it was filled with families and the theater seemed epic; ageless. Sure it needs AC and some renovation but it is priceless.

This is a historic building with the architecture familiar to Fox theater patrons. It has ambiance and it's intimate. Unfortunately, its in need of repairs to make it fully appreciated. The carpets are worn, the paint is chipping, and the bathroom is barely functioning. I...More

We lucked out and were in town when Makana was playing at the Palace. What a treat. He toured the world this year, and came back to the islands to share his Hawaiian slack key guitar music once again. Most small towns had a Palace...More
