After reading about Kaumana Caves on TripAdvisor we decided to stop there on our way to Hilo. We purchased head lamps at Walmart and made sure we had on good hiking shoes and brought water. Our kids (aged 4 and 6), loved this adventure and...More

Nicholas fantini, 16 yr old , Italy. I heard about the caves once me and my mother stepped on the island, just a name, nothing in particular. But after visiting the Thurston caves and left completely unimpressed we decided to give a look at the...More

Enter prepared to go caving (i.e. spelunking). As everyone says: lights, real shoes, water. You don't need gloves but will appreciate them, as the lava is sharp. We initially wore long sleeves and pants, but changed before entering the second cave. If you go deeper...More

This cave is not the easiest place to access but if you can make it then it is a neat place to check out!

Quick stop on our way to Hilo. You're able to explore the cave as you wish. Bring headlamps. It truly is so dark that you don't know if your eyes are open or closed. We hiked a ways back and then turned off the lights....More

We were just driving by and saw the sign. We went down the stairs to the entrance but did not venture in. We were not prepared wrong shoes no flash lights. Very cool though.

Visited Kaumana caves with my husband and 5 year old son. They loved it! I was only wearing flip flops so I didn't venture in very far but they went in for about 25 minutes. It was a little damp but not cold. The entrance...More

Note: bring a good led flashlight (not just your phone light) if you plan to hike back the tube. The tube was pretty cool. Most of the area was high enough to stand until we got several hundred yards in. Oh and bring an actual...More

Bring a good flashlight and go as far as you want. Not for those who are claustrophobic, and the further you go, the tighter the spaces get.

This cave is the favorite of people who like things a little scary, but not dangerously so. Every review reiterates to wear serious shoes, flashlight or better still head lamp, and water. It's fun, kids can do it, it's slippery, be careful, and as one...More

No Sulfur smell. Very humid. My husband has asthma and he did great in the tubes. He did admit that the further back he went, he really could feel the "thick" air, but he had no adverse effects.

Good news. Plenty of free parking and no entrance fee. Bathrooms, picnic tables, and very safe environment, especially for the kids. If you are traveling from Kona on Saddle Road, it is right off that road, just outside... More
