The road crosses the lava tube so you can go left or right. Wear shoes or boots with good traction, jeans, long sleeves, hat and gloves. You do not want to scratch yourself in lava rock. Bring a lantern, if possible the kind you put...More

Free attraction where you can spend 10 minutes stretching your legs after crossing the Island from the Kona airport to Hilo on the way to the volcano. Its not worth a special trip to see it though.

This was a really cool experience. Our B&B host advised us to go here and to take the cave on the left at the bottom of the stairs for the best experience. He also provided us with two flashlights and this was essential. A phone...More

Parking across the street. Follow the bright yellow railings. Bring STRONG flashlights - this is a do it yourself site with no guides or anything. A bit slippery underfoot, but spectacular and unusual lava flows make it worth the scramble. Steep staircase and climb down...More

The Kaumana Caves State Park is right off Kaumana Drive near the 4-mile marker just a little distance from downtown Hilo and not too far from the University of Hawaii-Hilo campus. If you want to experience what a lava tube is like and don't have...More

A cave very closed to the road. What is neat about it is just how red the ground is inside the cave. Very colorful contrast with the black volcanic rock. Nearby you can picnic.

Not sure why they call it a Caves Park since lave tubes are not caves and this portion of the tube was exposed due to a roof collapse--the opening now called "skylight." You can walk right down into the tube, just be careful of the...More

Interesting lava tube, but steep steps, rough rocks and dark. There are restroom facilities and a picnic table. It is easy to view the cave from above without walking down into it.

The caves are across the road from the carpark. You will need strong flashlights. There is some steep stairs to go down to reach them. We first went into the left hand cave. It is very rocky initially. You need to walk about 15 meters...More

It was interesting to see a different lava tube than Volcanoes National Park's Thurston. After parking across the street, this one is reached via a set of very steep stairs. The lava tube is unlit, and the floor is rock-covered. A flashlight or headlamp is...More

No Sulfur smell. Very humid. My husband has asthma and he did great in the tubes. He did admit that the further back he went, he really could feel the "thick" air, but he had no adverse effects.

Good news. Plenty of free parking and no entrance fee. Bathrooms, picnic tables, and very safe environment, especially for the kids. If you are traveling from Kona on Saddle Road, it is right off that road, just outside... More
